Washington Post/ABC News poll – Dean leads the field
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 11:43 PM by pruner
Democrats are divided over the direction of their party and sharply split over whether party leaders should be more willing to confront President Bush or compromise with him on the Iraq war, taxes and the budget deficit, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

<snip>

A total of 1,003 randomly selected adults were interviewed Oct. 26-29 for this Post-ABC News survey. A separate sample of Democrats brought the total of Democrats interviewed to 642. The margin of sampling error for the overall results is plus or minus 3 percentage points and 4 percentage points for the Democratic subsample.

<snip>

No Democrat holds a clear lead in the race for the presidential nomination. Former Vermont governor Howard Dean leads the field with 16 percent of the vote, followed by Rep. Richard A. Gephardt (13 percent), Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (13 percent) and retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark (12 percent). No other candidate gets more than 10 percent of the vote. Nearly seven in 10 Democrats said they were satisfied with their choices this year, virtually identical to the proportion satisfied with the field in early January 2000.

But the survey also found that Democrats know little about the candidates. Lieberman and Gephardt are best known, though only about a third acknowledged they knew much about the two candidates' personal qualities or issue positions. Only one in six Democrats was familiar with Clark, the least well-known of the first-tier candidates.

5. So you think when most Americans hear this line:
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 12:23 AM by NewYorkerfromMass
"The U.S. will not always be the strongest nation in the world militarily".

....that they will come flocking to Dean?.....

Clue: They are more likely to run away from him. And fast.

One should note that nothing is known in these polls other than name recognition and media buzz. Oh and.... not a vote has yet been cast.

Why does ANYONE like Gephardt? Didn't he already lose this race several times before? He looks like a fake decaying blow-hard. Am I wrong?

10. We need to get rid of the DC has been's
Let us bring something new and fresh from outside of DC.

Doctor Dean is the prescription to cure this mess.

Seem to work for the Repubs, they go to Gov's and they do pretty good at becoming president. Let us try that. Gee, the last dem president was anti dc, a gov from a very small state. Anyone remember Clinton and he flew the rebel flag and honor it at services. If I remember, he said it was not about the civil war but a rebel flag. Rebel flag issue was ok for Clinton.

7. That's great, but...
WTF is this:

74 percent of all Republicans said the leadership of their party was taking it in the right direction.

Far as I can tell, we are counting on the more moderate Repubs and Independents who were swayed by Bush's "compassionate conservative" bullshit to come around to the idea that Bush sucks and either stay home or vote for a Dem.

Even FOX News has taken to occasionally broadcasting the lies and crimes of this administration. How can 74% of them think their party is going in the right direction? This really pisses me off.

11. It is because we get caught up in silly issues of the flag
Dean said nothing wrong. Some people do not listen or think. Just yell and scream.

12. Agreed
and most people don't read past "Kerry criticizes Dean" or "Lieberman criticizes everyone".

They don't think Dems have strong leadership, that's clear.

But why do they think the Repubs are taking us in the right direction? Or should I take heart that up to 25% of them think BushCo. is taking them in the WRONG direction? Man, we have a lot of work to do...

I am very optimistic about Dean's chances, but I can also see a completely different outcome next year where we are just blindsided by the knee-jerk support for 4 more years of Bush. I try to block out the vision, but it's there. Makes me want to work harder.

14. We need to be different
We need to be the party that makes issues simple to understand, not lie and deal with anyone that lies.

I am leaning towards dean. I think he brings hope. He is a doctor but looks like Joe average.

I am new on here and they laugh at me for saying he was smart how he used the internet. No, to me he is a man of action. The rest of them will sit around and study something and nothing gets done. Dean moves out and gets things done. Yes you will make mistakes.

I also read many times on here how the repubs use their power in smoke filled rooms to destroy us but it seems our rich and powerful in smoke filled rooms are trying to destroy dean and his internet gang.

I remember the repubs and dems laught at Jesse and his internet campaign.

15. my read
Ok - reading through it I see 2 trends... there's a disconnect between people's like/dislike of the president and how he measures up in almost every issue. I think some of that is the old 'if i dont like bush and i voted for him then somehow i'm culpable' problem.

On the dem candidate side, Lieberman still rides pretty high (which shows that a lot of the 'havent paid much attention' types take him on name recognition - where we see a lot of political energy he just doesnt do well) - especially in that last one. Most likely to beat Shrub? Dear God let's hope not... if that's true our ox is really in the ditch.
