1. Not in Michigan
We had one in 2002 when Republican Terry Lynn Land's wealthy family bought the job for her with a huge advertising expenditure to gain her name recognition.
Her predecessor, Republican Candice S. Miller used the Michigan Secretary of State's office as a taxpayer funded personal campaign HQ. She spent thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars changing the signs at the Sec'y of States offices in 1994, and replaced them with signs that prominently displayed her name, in large letters (some were even done in individual neon lighted letters).
The rest of the country is now paying for that expenditure that Candice parlayed the taxpayer funded advertising into a seat in the U.S. House.
