Do we really need to "finish the job?"
Our men are dying literally every day and I honestly do NOT see any conceivable way for us to influence without violent coercion (or even "cleansing" of troubled regions) the development in government in Iraq. How much more could it hurt if all of our men hauled ass back to the states before another dozen troops get gunned down?

4. Unfortunately I am.
How is it going to make the situation any worse than the bloodstained quagmire we're in now? At least then our troops will be safer, and the Middle Eastern fanatics will no longer be able to play the occupation card to get followers.

10. There was no viable "plan" to begin with
Stay and "finish" the job? What job? Decimating the Iraqi people? Getting untold THOUSANDS killed and maimed? Reducing the "excess" population???

Get a clue here. Please allow me to proffer an analogy. If someone breaks down the door to YOUR house, pisses on YOUR carpet, terrorizes YOUR family, tying your children up in plastic handcuffs and ASSAULTING YOUR WIFE, breaks all of the heirlooms Grandma left you, HUMILIATES you, destroys YOUR home, brings in animals YOU consider unclean and allows them to piss on YOUR furniture, then leaves finding NOTHING incriminating against you with not so much as a "very sorry" would YOU want THAT PERSON to be "in charge" of "cleaning up the mess?" :wtf:

8. What will "we" accomplish
by staying there?

There was no exit plan going in and there is not one now. All that is being accomplished, IMHO, is more deaths on both sides.

6. OK I'm torn
I do believe that we shouldn't cut and run because that could create another Afghanistan.

On the other hand I've always thought this was unwinnable which is why I never agreed with this war in the 1st place.

Looks like a no win situation to me.

7. "Our men are dying literally every day"
You may have noticed that today one of the dead was a *woman*, who joins several of her military sisters who have died in this mess.

9. In this patriarchal society,
The male indefinite is acceptable to use to refer to members of both genders.

And it sounds more dramatic.

11. It will continue to be patriarchal
if you continue to make it so.

And, no, it's *not* acceptable.

14. " one could say our men AND women killed in combat."
Most of the press has been using this form, yes.

Most of the press has been careful to include women in reports of the military.

15. For smeg's sake...
Can we keep this thread on track? We can argue about semantics and patriarchal bias another time.

Our soldiers/troops are dying. That better?

Thank you.

It's no small thing.

Have you seen the thread on "stealth" of women's issues?

If our issues don't matter, then ... Oh, I can't believe we're still debating the same things we were during the Vietnam era.

sigh..

16. As soon as someone can coherantly explain the Objective
One cannot execute an exit plan without
Clear objectives .
Was the objective to "oust Saddam" ?
if it was, that objective is complete

Was the objective to Secure Oil Fields ?
that is not complete

Was the objective to find weapons of mass destruction ?
:eyes:

Was the objective to Build a Democracy in Iraq ?
:eyes:

Was the objective to invade occupy and rule ?
:scared:

There will be a bloody reckoning in Iraq no matter what we do and nothing except Halliburton's bank account benefits by our participation.

20. This administration doesn't "finish" jobs
This administration has the attention span of a gnat; sooner or later, they'll get bored with Iraq and move on to their next project (Iran maybe? or perhaps Syria? or could it be France?).
