Former POW Lynch plans wedding

Hope this isn't a dupe...couldn't find it w/a search of the boards

Are we really supposed to give a fuck?? I mean c'mon...(to paraphrase George Carlin): Are our lives so bankrupt that this is under the heading of "US News"??!!

SNIP
Former prisoner of war Pfc. Jessica Lynch plans to visit her fiance’s family this Thanksgiving and to marry Army Sgt. Ruben Contreras in June, the groom-to-be’s mother said.

1. ???
Are we supposed to intentionally not give a f*** either? I, for one, give a f*** and hope that she has a great life and is happily married.

4. there's the rub
as long as the media whores keep pvt. lynch in the headlines
BushCo can milk it.

if her star fades, then more questions about her 'rescue'
as long as she becomes the next 'bennifer' the spotlight
for the majority of sheeple will be off BushCo.

we could try and use this as an opening to change the minds of those who are still buying into her story and by association BushCo did a good thing by going into Iraq

5. You're more than welcome to care...
But does it actually need to occupy one kilobyte of bandwidth on a news website, let alone the conscious decision of the editors to place it under the "US News" heading?

Save it for the Podunk, West Virginia Gazette weedings and obituaries page. Get her name out of my goddamn news. Save it for a list of the names of the 20 who actually died today. Her 15 minutes should have been up hours ago.

10. Only because they tell you it's news...
...and tell you to give a fuck.

Were you regularly call back to Podunk, West Virginia to see how she's doing? Were you just asking yourself the other day, "I wonder when Jessica Lynch will be getting married?" Probably not. They tell you what to care about and when to care about it.

3. Just another distraction, a happy little wartime story
I also don't care about her getting married. I'm just waiting for her "amnesia" to resolve.

7. I read an interesting LTTE while out of town
Sorry, can't remember which newspaper it was, but the author was very upset that PFC Lynch would not meet with the lawyer who supposedly "rescued" her. The author went on about how selfish and horrible it was that she would not meet with the guy. I am wondering how many more of the gullible public think that now?

8. It seems a few of you are missing my point
I didn't say, "I wish Jessica Lynch would go away and die of some horrible disease on her wedding day." It seems too many people have fallen into the generalization trap we rail against daily at DU.

Read a little more closely. My gripe is with the media that have elevated her to mythic status thinks we should (or is telling us we should) care about her getting married. Why is this any different than Ben and J.Lo? Is it really news? Unfortunately those of you who say "well, I care" are allowing them to tell you it's news. The better question is "Should it be?"

9. News Flash on CNN
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 09:58 PM by Kimber Scott
In the midst of the war on Iraq and the war on terror this News Flash came across on CNN today (not an exact quote) - "Courtney Love was arrested for drugs today." This is news?

I'd rather hear about Lynch getting married, (although not in a News Flash. They should save that for important stuff like helicopters full of GIs being shot down over Iraq.) That girl has been used, more than once by this administration and then was given amnesia. She didn't ask for any of it. I hope she has a better life ahead.

Also, I didn't know of her wedding plans until I read it here.

She'll live a great and lucrative life with or without the news reminding us each week that she refused to meet with her rescuer, or is getting married, or had a bowel movement.

Let her live the great life I hope she does miles away from my TV.

BTW-Welcome to DU!!! Glad you're here! ;-)

11. Its no different than...
when music or entertainment figures get married or die. People obviously are interested in things like that. Its "news" to some people. For example, when Princess Diana died, I didn't give two shits but I realized that it mattered to other people so it didn't bother me that it was reported all over the news. No big deal. Turn the channel or don't read the story.

17. At least
music and entertainment figures have actually done something. All she did was stay horizontal at a hospital.

which is a hell of alot more important than performing music or acting in films. You've got it backwards.

and I managed to stay upright the entire time. Where's my 15 minutes? Hell, I remember everything that happened, too (except for maybe a few fuzzy nights in Hong Kong). Where's my million dollar book deal??

Edited on Mon Nov-03-03 02:41 PM by AWD
....don't you have to be held prisoner somewhere in order to earn the tag "prisoner of war"???

She was in a hospital being cared for, and they tried to deliver her to US troops at one point.

I wish the girl well but It's really sickening to see her get used as a propeganda tool.
