Coulter: Dems take our money, kill babies, and discriminate using race.
I work in a CPA firm with 100+ degreed accountants/CPA's/MBA's. At least 70% are conservative. Our partner in charge controls the sound system and he puts the dial on right wing talk radio every day. All day I have to listen to Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly and Coulter.

But this is too much. They now have an "Ann Coulter Talking Action Figure" in the lunch room. The doll says the most hateful things you can imagine . . . all of which are supposedly Coulter quotes. This one really gets to me "Liberals can't just come out and say they want to take more of our money, kill babies, and discriminate on the basis of race".

Don't get me wrong. I could give a shit what Ann Coulter says. What I'm worried about and what I've seen over and over again is how the right wing is using this kind of propaganda to convert younger and younger people over to their way of thinking. I know of at least a dozen young CPA's who started with our firm in the last year who tell me they graduated from college as left-leaning independents. Not democrats but definately leaning left. After a year of hearing hate radio, day after day after day, I hear them spewing Rush's talking points like they were their own. They are brainwashed!!!

And now, they have joined the wingnuts in my office and walk around quoting Ann Coulter!! They listen to all the doll's quotes and then race each other to memorize them.

It's sickening. We've gotta "counter-brainwash" these young people before they convert any others.

When it's the boss who is the most right-wing of them all, it's hard to complain too much without jeapardizing my own career.

8. Do you realize what this is doing to your health?
For the sake of your mental and physical health, please begin now to try and find another job, even it takes a year or two. I'm serious. The toll your current situation takes may not be apparent for a long time, but you might as well be in a fancy concentration camp for 8 to 10 hours a day. It's very difficult to be sane in a looney bin. Stress kills.

Next thing you know, they will be targeting you, subtly at first, but then it will grow stronger and nastier. You'll be "fair game" as the election nears.

Best of luck to you.

11. I'm not worried about me. My values were shaped as a teenager.
My mom and dad divorced when I was 14. My mom worked two 40 hr/week jobs to keep three kids clothed and fed. NOTHING a wingnut can say to me now will change the way I feel about the role of government in helping the less fortunate.

you can't jeopardize your job and your kids, but perhaps a quiet job search may be in order.

I doubt you'll find many "liberal" accountants, but there should be a lot of apolitical ones around. Much healthier environment.

Of course. But you wouldn't ingest small doses of poison into your body day after day and expect to stay healthy. Why do you give your brain little daily doses of poison and expect it to stay healthy?

It's a terrible time for job-hunting, I realize, but even if something doesn't come up right away, keep looking around. Do that networking. Sooner or later it will pay off!

29. It's simple . . . I believe in my values. NOTHING anyone can say
including Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Savage, et. al. can change those values. My concern is how this right wing shit is converting more and more young, college educated people. They come out of college leaning left, then they listen to Rush at work and start moving right. That is what bothers me.

A lot of young people find that when they enter the "real world" they have a lot less money than they thought they would. They look at the paycheck, see the gross, and then look at the net. Suddenly, all the tax that's taken out, plus the Social Security, pension, health insurance, and etc. make it look like they only get to keep about half of what they earn. Accountants, though, ought to know better.

Anyone else have any thoughts on why young folks drift right?

44. Exactly...
I would ask them if they would kindly stop putting that stuff on the radio...the workplace in my mind is not the place for this kind of stuff...I wouldn't put liberal radio on at work out of respect for my co-workers...if they don't like a liberal point of view than I wouldn't subject them to it...I would expect to be treated the same...

If they don't...quit...there's no reason you have to be subjected to that kind of hate in the workplace...

13. Perhaps Coulter's dementia would subside if she actually ate some
food. In fact, I find it strangely humorous they would put the doll in the lunchroom.
I would start with talking about McCarthyism to co-workers. Coulter is just full of nonsense. I know many on DU don't like Tweety but my only beef with him is he gives Coulter a free pass when she is on his show. It's as if he's afraid to confront her because she's a woman.

16. A little Good News
This past spring, I had three weeks of temp work at a CPA firm. They employ about 25 accountants. They do the financial reports for about three-quarters of the townships in the county I live in.

Most of them are born-again Christians.

They're also the most liberal bunch of folks I've worked for in a long, long time.

There is hope.

You can tell your boss that you are offended by this material and would like it if this wasn't played. If he takes any action against you can sue his ass off and own the freaking company. What you're dealing with is not much worse than a black man being forced to listen to David Duke radio.

As I already said. It's like making a black man listen to David Duke radio. Dude should talk to the boss and express how this type of thing makes him feel and how it effects his work performance. How these shows spew the worst kinds of lies about liberals and foster hatred. If boss-man refuses he has grounds for a suit.

52. Political discrimination is not illegal.
Illegal discrimination is defined by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 pertains to unfavorable employment practices, decisions, etc. in regard to "race, color, religion, sex, or national origin."

Title VII does not pertain to political ideology.

I do feel this kind of harassment is unfair and unethical and should be removed from the workplace.

30. I worked with a bunch on wignuts once
It was in 1997, right around the McVeigh trial. When I commented how horrible it was that children died in the explosion, the head wingnut (my boss) said, "Oh well. Children shouldn't have been in the building." WTF? They all listened to Rush and Dr. Laura and all that crap. The office was in the country and they really gave rural residents a bad name. After my hair fell out in clumps, I quit abruptly. My boss found out where I was working and called me there to harass me. I didn't do anything about it and regret that I didn't tell the lot of them to fuck off. I don't know why I didn't or felt that I couldn't. It irks me a little to this day.

Goebbelsian Propaganda still works as well today as when Goebbels first invented it. Just ask Annthrax.
