once again, the rw intimidators win?

CBS Mulls Canceling Reagan Mini-Series - Report

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - CBS is considering canceling or postponing its upcoming mini-series "The Reagans" under mounting Republican criticism that the production inaccurately depicts the former president and his wife, Daily Variety reported on Monday.

Also, the director of the four-hour TV movie, Robert Allan Ackerman, has quit the production over creative differences with CBS executives who have insisted on numerous last-minute alterations to the mini-series, the Hollywood trade paper said.

Depending on the nature of the final cuts, Ackerman may ask the Directors Guild of America to remove his name from the movie in protest, Variety said.

CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves acknowledged on CNBC last week that "there are some edits being made trying to present a more fair picture of the Reagans."

"We've looked at the rough cut. There are things we like ... there are things we don't like ... there are things we think go too far," he told the cable news channel.

25. If a movie I wouldn't watch is cancelled . . .
. . . does James Brolin still get paid.

Frankly, I don't understand any of what happened with this movie. From the casting to the controversy, this whole thing was bizarre. My feeling is CBS should have revised the script at the beginning or stood up to the pressure. I don't like the fact that "art" (if something involing James Brolin can be tagged that) can get altered after the fact in the face of criticism, unless something truly horrifying was produced.

But at the end of the day, I really don't care since you couldn't pay me to watch it.

2. So much for freedom of speech
I think it was Al Franken who said on the Randi Rhodes show that satire is protected under the first amendment even if the person(s) being satirized doesn't get it.

20. This isn't a first amendment issue.
It is a threatened boycott. You can boycott someone for any damn reason you want to, or even no reason for that matter. It is their right not to watch CBS or buy the sponsor's products, just as it is our right to watch and buy them. Probably Hallmark got scared, as did other sponsors. No major sponsor wants to be associated with something that is highly controversial. So advertising rates for the show plummeted to the point that reruns of "I Love Lucy" would have made more money. It was a $$$$$$ decision. $$$$ talks, bullshit walks.

4. The right wing wins because they have a lot of media
outlets and they stay on message. Imagine a miniseries on Clinton. Eight years would be boiled down to a BJ in the oval office and a failed real estate deal.

The right repeat the same message on all of their different talk shows. It's a method liberals could stand to imitate. Anger seems to work. Niceness sure doesn't that's for sure.

6. Yep, unfortunately creating a Party-Loyal Sub-Media is antithetical
to the American Experiment.

The simple fact that we are dreaming and wishing that we had such an evil tools, is a sign that the Old American Republic has played out it's course.

But now that the Reich Wing has theirs, we can do nothing but try and belatedly create ours.

In either case, this is a signpost pointing neon to the Downfall of the American Republic.

7. This is reprehensible
"there are some edits being made trying to present a more fair picture of the Reagans."

more fair? you mean they plan to show him drinking the blood of a fe of the hundreds of thousands of Central AMericans slaughtered under his policies? Or maybe show him filling his depends during Cabinet meetings?

No way were they going to show the POS half as bad as he really was.

Only Reagan fans would be interested anyway. CBS isn't in the truth game; they are in television.

9. Before you go mailing off a letter to CBS...
understand that you shouldn't bother trying to appeal to them with the free speech argument, or integrety in the media. They don't give a shit about that. The only thing they care about is advertisers. So let them know you want to see it, and you'll spend money on the advertisers, and, btw, you've also sent off a copy of this letter to said advertisers.

At the end I said something to the effect, "We all know that the right's definition of 'fair and balanced' is skewed."

If networks can't be independent, why bother to pretend? Just give it all to the RNC or Murdoch and see how many viewers they get. 24/7 Bush TV. Maybe someday some country will come to liberate us.

28. Censorship is when the gov't does it. When a corp..
does it, then it is called business. They want to sell advertising. They are not in the business of political advocacy. The advertisers don't want to antagonize either side and lose buyers, so the advertising rates for "hot" programs is lower than for bland programs.

24. MoveOn.org or a similar group
should buy commercial time during the edited show and stick it to the Gipper, hard. There are plenty of indisputable facts about Reagan's record that I'm sure the series wont touch. Oh, wouldn't that be sweet.
