Rossi will run for governor

DAVID AMMONS; The Associated Press

State Sen. Dino Rossi, a suburban conservative who dazzled colleagues by closing a $2.5 billion budget gap without higher taxes, plans to run for governor, he told The Associated Press on Monday.

Rossi, 44, a Sammamish Republican, had been deliberating for months over a possible bid. He emerged as the GOP’s top choice after several other high-profile prospects bowed out.

"I intend to run," he said in an interview. "My analysis is that, yes, I can win it. I wouldn’t be moving down this path if I didn’t think I could win."

He said Democrats have held the governor’s mansion for 20 years and that it’s time for a change.

"I am absolutely thrilled. I expect Dino Rossi to be the next governor," said state Republican Chairman Chris Vance, who had recruited him to run. "Dino Rossi is a fiscal conservative with a social conscience."

3. No clue who he's running against!
As far as I know, the dems haven't named a candidate yet, nor have any really stepped forward to replace Locke.

5. Christine Gregoire
She'll probably be the Dems' nominee.

Unless Rossi is a moderate Republican, there's no way he's becoming governor in Washington state.
