Vermont NEA chapter votes to endorse Dean

MONTPELIER - A statewide teachers' union that often refused to back Howard Dean's gubernatorial campaigns has endorsed his Democratic presidential bid.

The Vermont chapter of the National Education Association acknowledged the differences it had with Dean over the years but said it endorsed his presidential effort "for the principles he espouses on the issues affecting us as educators, as citizens, as Americans."

The NEA's 20-member board voted unanimously to back Dean during a meeting Saturday, committing the union's 10,000 members to the Democratic front-runner.

It's the second endorsement for Dean by a statewide teachers' union. The 335,000-member California Teachers Association offered its support last week.
