BBV: AK discussing e-voting machines
"I believe in the machinery," (Laura) Glaiser (Director of the Alaska Division of Elections) said. "I would stake my vote on it."

Because of the federal mandate, Glaiser said the state's only choice was what company to buy the touchscreen machines from. Glaiser said she recommended Diebold machines because Diebold produced Alaska's Accu-vote system

"We wanted the two (systems) to be able to interface," Glaiser said.

But Diebold, whose voting systems are used throughout the nation, has been criticized in recent months. In late July, shortly after Alaska purchased its new machines, a team from Johns Hopkins and Rice universities released a scathing report on Diebold's touchscreen models.

3. That was quick.
I didn't know we had any AK DU people here. I have an acquaintence who works for a law firm specializing in the oil industry who would like this issue to go away. He can't back up his position with facts, but can only call me a conspiracy theorist. I prefer a democracy fact finder myself.

Good job, Laura Glaiser... :puke: Now that you have professed your beliefs, please do us a favor and resign since your services are not needed. Anybody can believe... We don't pay people to believe, they are supposed to think rationally , pinhead  ... -C

5. You can email her. I did.
laura_glaiser@gov.state.ak.us

Here is my letter to Ms. Glaiser:

Ms. Glaiser,

While I am not a citizen of the State of Alaska, I am a citizen who is
concerned about the direction our nation is going, especially in regards
to voting integrity.

I came across an article that was run in the Anchorage Daily News on
November 1, 2003 (http://www.adn.com/front/story/4298917p-4309020c.html)
in which you were quoted as saying: "I believe in the machinery," "I would
stake my vote on it." This is a very disturbing comment by someone whom I
believe to not hold a degree in Computer Science.

This is a very controversial topic at the time and it has been picking up
steam in the media. California has moved to block certification of the
Diebold touch-screen machines because of illegal and unethical
installation of an unverified software patch which could have
signifigantly altered the election results
(http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,61068,00.html).

Please be aware of the action in the House of Representatives in
Washington D.C. by Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey who has authored
HR2239 "The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act of 2003"
which will put forth measures to ensure our right to vote is protected.
You may view the overview of the bill here:
http://holt.house.gov/issues2.cfm?id=5996

I also urge you to take some time and review the following sites:

http://www.blackboxvoting.com - You may download and read the chapters of
a new book by Bev Harris who has uncovered a lot of dirt on these eVoting
machine manufacturers, including fraud in elections in Georgia and
Florida. Please pay attention to chapters 2 and 11.

http://verifiedvoting.org

Ignoring these warning signs is not only putting the votes of the citizens
of Alaska at risk of being compromised but it is also putting the votes of
all Americans at risk. Do not allow this travesty to happen, suspend the use of these devices
until reliable, verifiable, accountable methods can
be found

6. My email
"I believe in the machinery," (Laura) Glaiser (Director of the Alaska Division of Elections) said. "I would stake my vote on it."

Glad you see it that way, but other people don't. Upon what do you base this faith? What are your credentials to evaluate software and determine its suitability for voting? Do you have a computer science degree? Have you brought in programmers you trust to evaluate the software? Have you seen the source code? I have and I think anyone who trusts the machines is a fool (and I DO have the expertise to understand what I have seen). Virtually every computer professional on the planet says this is a bad idea, and yet you will stake our democracy on what a salesman told you.

Would you take a drug that almost every medical proffesional told you was dangerous, just because the pharmacuetical company told you it was safe?

I guess you would, given you answer about voting machines.

David Allen

Sounds like a fundamentalist kind of thing.

9. I only vote absentee
I don't know what happens with my vote after I mail it in but I don't know what happens with my vote with BBV either. I prefer Absentee just for my own peace of mind and the convenience of it.
