KENT -- The Colgans tied a yellow ribbon around the maple tree in their front yard and intended to take it down once their son Ben returned safely from Iraq.
But yesterday, Joe and Pat Colgan tied a black ribbon of mourning on the tree -- the same maple they planted 30 years ago to mark the birth of their fourth child.

His parents, Joe, 62, and Pat, 60, are peace activists who have marched against the Vietnam War, the Trident submarine base across Puget Sound from Seattle and the Iraq War. But they supported their son when he decided to enlist.
"My son knew where we stood," Pat said yesterday. "But we supported our son -- in anything he chose to do."

I just heard this man interviewed on the Dave Ross show in Seattle. Of couse, he was grief-stricken, but you could hear the anger in his voice when he described what he thought his son died for...he marched in the anti-war demonstrations there (Seattle) but supported his son's decision to enter the military. He also spoke about the division this is creating in the US, and how he knows "good people on both sides" and closed with something of a plea for that the truth be told about this war. I can't stop thinking about this guy, and what he said, it was very moving.
We've got to get Bushco out of office. My son will soon enough be of draft age.
