Why are Africa's Anglican leaders so bigoted?
They're playing the "listen to the pleas of the developing world" card to justify to savage homophobia.

If those cysts on the rear end of Rush Limbaugh really want to help their followers, they should be fighting poverty, not homosexuality

1. because they were heavily influenced by early missionaries
who were evangelicals or over-simplified the Anglican Christian message until it was unrecognizable.

They may as well schism and go join the Baptists.

2. They are afraid of losing their following and power
This is an excuse for these priests to gain
more of audience, hence more money and power
in the Archdiocese. It's the Jerry Falwell/Pat Robertson
way of shepherding.

3. Is it too much to ask them for more Jesse Jackson and less Jesse Helms?
Enough is enough already.

4. Jesse Jackson is another evangelical
It's time for those African bishops to read the Creed, the Articles of Religion and re-do their Catechism.

Where is Bishop Sponge when you need him?

5. Yes but...
Evangelical != Fundamentalist
Baptist != SBC (Jackon's an American Baptist, I believe.)

6. I've got two theories
aside from agreeing what TrogL said.

First, evidently many African cultures pretend that homosexuality doesn't exist. One of the priests in my church hosted a Tanzanian observer at General Convention, and he said, "In my country, I've never heard of a man loving another man or a woman loving another woman. You Americans have gone crazy."

Also, and this is just my own theory, when the missionaries came in, converts were required to give up polygamy. Maybe there's an underlying hint of "You made us give up polygamy, and now you're changing the rules you taught us in 1870."
