Poll question: Poll: Was tonite's vote Good News, Bad News or "Eh"?
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 01:35 AM by Armstead
Let me preface by admitting that I've got a really bad cold, so I haven't had the moxie to subject myself to television tonite to follow the election results. What I've seen are dribs and drabs here on DU. Mississippi and KY bad (surprise), but some other places good news or mixed results.

What is the final verdict, according to yourself and/or the awful pundits?

2. River in Egypt
Yes, hell yes. They skunked us again. Dems weren't organized to deal with Republican dirty tricks in Mississippi. How stupid, how trusting can we be?

Yes, hell yes. We're getting handed our hats in election after election. Our big winner tonight? A tainted pol in a big, mostly Democratic city. That sucks folks.

DU, much as I love the people here, are at the heart of the Democratic problem. We're not reaching out and we're not taking the center. We smugly sneer (and smirk!) about Bush being a Nazi and the "pukes" being on their way out and and world being against them and we keep getting elbowed aside.

This is a perfectly timed wake up call. Can we win in November '04? Yes, hell yes. But we can't win if we act like left wing freepers. And we can't win if we don't talk to our moderate neighbors in moderate language.

Sharpton said it best when he said he was the conservative candidate in the race--he wanted to conserve jobs and conserve civil rights and conserve our national resources. That's smart thinking. Big Dog showed us this 12 years ago--you don't win by playing the old losers' game and you don't win by playing their game. You win--WE win--by changing the rules and playing a smart game with our eyes on the final tally.

I will take half a loaf, I will gladly compromise, if it means getting Pretzels McFlightsuit out of the White House. The egomaniacal vanity of "my candidate or I vote Green" is a big assed Christmas gift to George Bush and his idiot son.

(Thank you for letting me vent.)

5. I think folks need to be more **welcoming** of conservative and moderate.
Dems.

A few folks here need to remember to be polite to folks and to be more forgiving of differences in opinion.

6. First of all
Bush IS a Nazi. He started an illegal war. He has sent our soldiers to fight and die for that illegal war. He has alienated the entire world with his arrogance. The rest of the world now hates the U.S.. He has created a deficit that my son and grandkids will still be paying for. He is trying his best to destroy Medicare and SS. He has under funded our schools. He has surrounded himself with the likes of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Ashcroft and LOOK at what THEY have done. Bush has done more damage to this country than can be listed here.

>>>>>>>But we can't win if we act like left wing freepers<<<<<<

FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE. Since when has "talking nice" gotten us anywhere? THAT is the attitude that has put us in the situation we're in NOW. We didn't fight, scream and raise ENOUGH hell when the REPUKES stole the Florida election. We should have been rioting in the streets. We didn't fight, scream and raise ENOUGH hell in the mid-term elections when it was "suspect" how the republicans who were suppose to lose, won. We should have been rioting in the streets. We didn't fight, scream and raise ENOUGH hell when the REPUKES decided to recall the Governor of Ca. We should have been rioting in the streets. We should be rioting in the streets over the Black Box Voting Machines. We should have been rioting in the streets over just about EVERYTHING the nazi in the WH has done...and we haven't. "Talking Nice" ain't going to cut the mustard! We must fight, scream, raise hell and claw our way to the WH.

We have to FIGHT and FIGHT hard against Ann Coulter, Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Savage, Boortz and THEIR ilk of the REPUKE party. Have they been "talking nice"---NO, they have not. Apparently, being the freepers they are has done exactly what it is intended to do...put their RW politicians in office. We MUST do the same to win.
FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE.

(Thank You for letting ME vent)

10. Squeeky Wheel gets the Grease
 We have been absolutely silent. Not a peep from any representatives except "What a great Leader is Bush*" and "I'm Glad We had Bush* in our Time of Need" That is the type of opposition I have been hearing everywhere but on these boards. If people think that is good strategy then I beg to differ.

7. "The egomaniacal vanity of "my candidate or I vote Green""
And you think 'everyone must vote for a Republican, because otherwise the other Republican will win' makes sense, do you?

3. NJ, NYC, PA, OH = victories. That's good.
A green makes the runoff against a conservative Dem in SF Mayor race.

Sounds like liberals are doing OK.

9. New Jersey Dems . . . .
really came out - Dems now have control of the all 3 legislative branches! The Repukes tactic of attacking McGreevey really backfired! Unfortunately, my town in New Jersey is still living back in the 50's - can't break the Repuke hold. I am working on it furiously, though.

11. The South is lost
We aren't going to win in the South anymore. Even if the Democrats run as conservatives, why would anyone vote for them? If you're a conservative, and you have the choice of a conservative Democrat or conservative Republican, why would you vote for the Democrat? Forget the South. We aren't going to win there. So we need to refocus everywhere else. Democrats can win in any other part of the country, without having to put up conservatives. Win the entire Northeast, the entire West Coast, the entire upper Midwest. These are all areas that Democrats can win. Focus on the states in other regions where we can win, like West Virginia, Arizona, New Mexico, Missouri. Let the Republicans have the South, and start calling out the Republicans for what they give a wink and nod to in the South, i.e., racism and hatred.

12. The South is perplexing
The increasing national mobility has made the South very puzzling.

It seems that many parts of the South seem determined to revert to the Dark Ages. But there also are liberals and many transplants from more liberal areas.

Give up on it? I dunno abouit that. But I do think we ought not to let the reactionary aspects of the South put the Democratic agenda in a straightjacket.

Zell Miller's recent betrayal seems to indicate that people of that mentality may be a lost cause.

13. I'm in the South
And if there are signs for hope here, I don't see them. Half the time, the Democrats don't even run against the Republicans, because the know they aren't going to get more than 40% of the vote, even in larger towns. It's frustrating to watch racists prey on fears and get 60% ever single time.
