Graham on 'short list' for VP spot

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean said Tuesday that Southerners must stop basing their votes on "race, guns, God and gays" and forge a multiracial coalition that focuses next year's presidential election on jobs, health care and a foreign policy reflecting American values.

In a wide-ranging luncheon address to the Capital Tiger Bay Club, the former Vermont governor also said U.S. Sen. Bob Graham is on his "short list" for vice president - if he wins the top spot at the Democratic National Convention in Boston next summer. Dean called Graham, who said Monday that he won't run for re-election to the Senate, "one of the greatest public servants in the United States."

An enthusiastic throng of Dean supporters filled the courtyard of the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center to greet Dean, the first active presidential candidate to campaign in Tallahassee.

Tiger Bay Club president Janet Hinkle told Dean he doesn't need to "whistle Dixie" when campaigning in the South. The political luncheon club presented him a NASCAR poster, an FSU ball cap and an empty beer can to carry around.

would be a great ticket.
It's part of Dean's strategy, the comments about the guys in pickup trucks etc. With Graham, Dean could win the South, and that's no easy task for a Democrat these days.:bounce:

2. Clark, Lieberman, Gepthardt and Kerry supporters don't get it

They don't see what Dean is doing.

They saw a sliver of an opening and jumped on him, not realizing what his strategy actually is. Dean's support on guns? Dean and the confederate flag? Now this? You see a pattern?

The other Democrats are too stupid to realize his strategy. That's why Dean is ahead and everyone else behind.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about all the candidates and stay ABB regardless of who gets the nomination, but calling all Dems. who don't support your candidate "stupid" doesn't make me want to be involved in his campaign. I don't think that supporters for any of the Dem. candidates are stupid. I know you don't speak for Dean, but I think we all owe it to our favorites to represent them the best we can.

I don't condone that either.

I don't post very often primarily because I don't want to get into any flame wars. Feel free to search my posts because I make a concerted effort not to bash any candidate. In fact, I exchanged a few very helpful posts about Dean's tax plan earlier today with Dean supporters. Economics isn't my strong suit and they could've easily flamed me, but they didn't and that made me think of Dean in a more positive light.

Isn't your goal to have me vote for Dean next Nov.? Calling me stupid doesn't inspire me very much. For what it's worth I don't think anyone who has found this board and tries to learn is stupid.

I guess my stupidity comes from the fact that I actually need to base my political strategy opinion on academics and not my own candidates talking points

Because for some reason every EXPERT on national elections believes that the most important demographic in EVERY state is still white, college educated, middle class, suburban moms and dads who regard themselves as independants.

but all this time I was wrong and what you actually have to do to relate to and win a third of the country is find a Yalie from Long Island representing Vermont who's telling you you've all been brainwashed by the republicans into racists and thats why you havn't been voting for my party.

But the other day Dean supporters here were saying that his position is no different than Kerry's?

If Dean's position is as Liberal or not Liberal as Kerry's why wouldn't Kerry be able to reach out to gun advocates?

3. Dean will have a hard time winning NY and CA, much less THE south

Graham or any other southernor would do for Dean in the south the same thing Lloyd Benston did for Dukakis in the south, nothing.

And although Graham has good vp credentials/gravitas for anyone, Miami Lakes aint dixie. Graham would work for someone like Kerry for winning Florida, but pretty much just Florida unless a drastic shift in that regions politics occur.

Was very sorry to see he was the first out of the race. He could add a great deal to the conversation as a candidate for Prez and would add much to the ticket as VP cand.

Plus, you just know he's got plenty of dirt on Team Bush.
