This is about Kerry. I wanted to give the poll a bump and Kerry had zero votes at that time. I know he has supporters here, so I wanted them to vote.

3. For the first time, voted for Clark
Mostly because I'm depressed over the GOP gubernatorial victories in the south. Can we win nationally with a non-southerner leading the ticket?

Anyway, that's why I voted for Clark in this poll, instead of Dean.

7. No, it is called rational thinking.
Clark is my second choice, then Edwards--with Dean not even on the radar screen.

My greatest fear is that Dean might win the nomination and take the Democratic party down with him.

And we lose because Bush's response to everything will be "But you supported us on that Senator..."

Why would Dean "bring us down?" He does just as well as everyone else against Bush. You're argument is getting tired.

Check the latest Zogby and ABC News/Washingtpost Post polls and see for yourself.

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=747

The president would outpoll any of the current leading Democratic contenders if the election were held today.  He would earn 46% of the vote against retired General Wesley Clark’s 37%; would beat former Vermont Governor Dr. Howard Dean, 47% - 39%; would poll 45% against Massachusetts Senator John Kerry’s 41%; would win over Missouri Congressman Richard Gephardt 47% - 38%, and would beat Connecticut Senator Joseph Lieberman, 46% - 38%.

Bush - 43%
Generic Democrat - 45%
(Undecided - 12%)

"Do you think President Bush deserves to be re-elected, or do you think it is time for someone new?"
Re-Elect Bush - 42%

14. Who is the unifying candidate?
Have you noticed that in additon to Clark having substantial support as best candidate, he is remarkably well received by many backers of virtually every other candidate? If Clark gets the nomination I believe it will be very easy for the Party to quickly unite around him for the campaign against Bush. And I don't mean in name only, I mean with activist support. He doesn't carry any of the baggage that going negative on other Democrats creates, plus he appeals to moderates because of his Southerner status, miliraty career and international experience, and to Progressives for his positions on issues. His unifying credentials in and of themselves should give grounds for some who may not currently support Clark, to make him their first choice.

America is tired of this fifty-fifty split. Out current resident is certainly not a uniter, but Clark my well be. He is not a polarizing figure. This may explain the Arnold phenomenon-a larger than life candidate who thinks like a democrat.

The Democratic Party unite behind someone that wasn't a Democrat until two weeks after he announced?

I call that taking the party down. If he were to win the nom, I am out of the Democratic Party. The DLC can have it.

You really think the hundreds of thousands of Dean supporters are going to work for clark?

20. We've got lots of good choices
General Clark is my man, he's the first candidate I've ever donated money to in my life. He's got the potential to bring America back together, reduce the divisiveness in this country, and be a leader that makes us proud again.

However, I am pretty close to flpoljunkie in my choices overall - I'd back Edwards or Kerry as a second choice. I started out as a Dean supporter, but his "angry man" routine and his mischaracterization of other candidates' positions makes me wonder what his true motives are in this race. I just don't trust him anymore.

But of course, ANYONE BUT BUSH IN 2004!

55. By doing what, exactly?
Inspiring a bunch of formerly-apathetic people to vote for him? Pointing out that there are a whole bunch of people in the South who stick Rebel flags on their trucks and/or vote for Republicans, but have no idea why? Promising to balance the budget? Opposing the Iraq war? Using the Vermont example (which worked pretty well, BTW) as a template for what he wants to do about national health insurance? For not being a Bush kiss-up? What is it? Tell us.

15. First of all, just how representative
is DU? I have no idea.

Secondly, in a truly fair and honest election, I don't see how Bush can possibly beat the Democratic nominee, whoever that is. I simply hear, over and over, too many stories of life-long Republicans who will not vote for Bush in '04.

The real issue, the only one, in my opinion, is whether or not we have a fair and honest election next year. A minor aspect is going to be how the campaign is conducted -- I expect that a major Republican theme will be that any support of the opposition is tantamount to treason. There will also be enormous manipulation of news out of Iraq and of economic numbers to try to make it look as is the economy is just wonderful, thanks to W.

We all have to do what we can to see that there's regime change on January 20, 2005.

69. I'm undecided
but I voted for Gephardt in this poll, because he isn't getting much respect around here. All those years fighting for workers' rights, job creation, concern for workers affected by trade pacts, and strong support of civil rights, sometimes even against his own President when the latter did business with the repubs, should count for something.

I favored Gore until it became 100% clear he won't stand again. My criteria for a 2004 candidate are simple:

1) I want someone with a genuine chance to win. To do that, they will have to be able to hold the northeast and Pacific west, run strongly in the midwestern industrial states, and be at least competitive in several southern states.

2) I want someone who will help, and certainly not hurt, the down-ticket. The repubs have the statistical advantage in the Senate races, with only 15 seats up vs. our 19, with several one-termers up, and Hollings, Graham, and Miller retiring. It is very important that we run well there, and hold ground or even take the House.

I have narrowed my choices to Gephardt, Kerry, Dean, and Clark. While I don't dislike the others, the campaign so far tells me they aren't going to win the nomination.

Anybody but Bush in the election, anybody but Dean and Lieberman in the primary.

73. To be fair
284 votes against Dean so far

you can make similar statements about any candidate by adding up the other votes, since none of them have over 50%.
