Poll question: Will the draft include women?
WHEN, not if, but when the Bush Administration brings back the draft do you think it will include women (which would irritate the religious right)?

4. I think the Women should stay home and......

....do the things that women do...like sewing and cooking meals....
darning socks and "Girl stuff" like that.

On edit: Actually, if the truth be known, most women have more sense
than to go fight a bunch of strangers who have never done anything to them...

5. Americans are not ready to accept women in
combat positions so there would be little support for drafting women.

I think if there is a new draft that there should be NO exemptions...not for fathers...and especially not for students. Back in the '60s middle class and rich kids did not fight in Viet Nam in the same numbers as working class and poor kids. It's about time that the rich feel the pain of sending their sons off to fight their wars.

8. wonder if
there is the basis of a court challenge. Actually I think one of the reasons the ERA never passed was because people believed it would allow/force the drafting of women.

11. Why ERA did not pass
This is from what I saw in IA in 1980.

IA had passed the ERA, and it was on its way to being passed by other states and becoming a constitutional amendment.

Then all the 'right-wing/religious right/repeal the gains of the 60s gangs' around the Reagan campaign woke up. They started petition drives in IA and other states that had passed the ERA to have a popular vote on the ERA.

Then front organizations for the Mormon church got heavily involved in LTTE campaigns saying that the ERA would bring with it

.....more abortions

.....unisex toilets everywhere (were these people ever on an airplane?)

.....total acceptance of homosexuality

In regard to the last point....

....A week or so before the vote, many TV stations in IA ran an anti-ERA ad that showed parts of a SF gay pride parade that would be most surprising/shocking to mid-westerners who had not prefiously seen such costumes, etc. The voice-over said something like ... 'Is this what you want to have everywhere in IA??? Vote no on ERA, or see this on our streets and in our schools every day.'

It was really unpleasant walking the precinct to get out the democratic voters in Nov 1980 when you knew that most of them were going to vote for Reagan and against the ERA ... which they did.

17. Never happen. Imperial Amerika is all about nepotism and
aristocratic privilege.

If they didn't send Richie Rich and His Pals out to fight during the Height of the Old Republic, they goddamned well won't be doing it now during the early phases of the Amerikan Empire.

Never happen, though I agree it would be nice to see.

The school teacher was telling me that it will cost them $18,000 a year to send their daughter to college this year. And that is to a Texas public university (TAMU), includes her tuition, fees, living expenses, but not food or books. That is so much money that most can't afford it unless they are "wealthy."

Surely they don't need big government on their backs, telling them what to do. So why wait for the order from the Draft Board?

12. Only the Dems have introduced legislation calling for a draft.
No Rep is touching the bill. So why are we calling it Bush's draft if the enabling legislation is coming from our guys?

15. Yep! Still the gang who can't shoot straight!!
Why in the HELL did Dems do this??? Now, should the draft come back, the repukes have political cover, and it was the ONE issue that would have energized the 18-26 nonvoting crowd. AND, they can lblame the Dems for it!!!!

:argh:

18. Yep. It boggles the mind.
If the Reps really do want a draft all they have to do is "play dead", and the Dems get the blame. Aside from the "high crimes & misdemeanors" clause, how could we impeach him for doing what we asked him to do? :silly: :wtf:  :dunce: :spank: :grr: :nuke:

13. Bush won't do it
It would just mean more angry voters against him. The religious irght would blast him, so he'd just go ahead with the way it's always been done.

14. There will be no female draft...
...for a very long time, if ever. Neither major party wants a draft at this point and they certainly don't want to create the uproar that drafting women would cause. The military need for a draft is just not happening at the moment. Maybe if there were ten million al Qaeda soldiers marching through Canada on their way to North Dakota.

21. Not gonna happen. Women don't want it.
I predict that there will be no mass movement among women to be drafted. There are lots of social trends involving women right now and this is just not on of them.

Didn't you get the memo from 1950? Women are not equal to men, and are only fit to do housework and have children.

22. Military life is not all combat.. If men have to join, so should women
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 06:18 AM by SoCalDem
BUT...and it's a BIG BUT...

Conscription should be across the board for both sexes..

Combat duty should be a height/weight/strength/physical capability issue..

Much like the police force and firefighting profession determines whether a candidate is capable, the military should also..

There is no reason why a woman who is 5'2" and 125 could not be in almost any capacity in the military, EXCEPT maybe combat.

If a woman wants to be in a combat position, a lot of thought should go into it, because soldiers always "cover their buddy", and they should all be comparable in carrying out their duties..

By this standard, there will be men who are not "combat material" too, and that's fine too.. There are many stateside positions that these people could do, and thet would free up some addtional "fighting soldiers"..

No consideration should be given for special deferments.. If we are truly at war, and will be forever, why should college even be an issue? How could a self-respecting "Murkan" even go to classes, knowing that someone else was doing his/her fighting.. It's the patriotic thing to do...fight for freedom, right??

Say you're married and "have better things to do"?..Sorry, pal.. You are in the Army now.. What "better" thing is there , if not fighting for freedom??

One parent MUST be allowed to stay home with the kids.. So if you are young and married and have a few kids, flip a coin..You can still serve the war effort at home..

Ages 18-25 ought to do it..

The fair and decent thing would be for the US of A to give each conscriptee who spends 4 years in service to the country...a "free pass" to any state school of his/her choice..books & fees included..

Two years = 50%..

During the term of service, a One year of continuous "out of country" service would be the max.. so if you are in for 2 years, you could be stateside (or safe) for half of that time , and you would get college for 1/2 price.. A 4 year term would ensure that you would only be "in danger" for 1/2 of the time( with a 1 yr "break") in between, and you would get free college..

Who would not want to serve??

Any conscriptee injured (IN ANY WAY) in a combat area, would get free medical care for LIFE..(not just for the injuries).. (these people are disabled, and may never hold they type of job that would get them decent medical coverage, and those service injuries can precipitate or aggravate other medical problems)

Rich, well-connected kids must go too.. No deferrments this time around.. Got flat feet??..we'll find you a sit-down job in the military..Got anal cysts?..we'll find you a nice stand-up job in the military..
