Wouldn't a more honorable way to win the south, be to run a military man?
One truth about the south is that it sends many of it's sons to the military, perhaps a greater percentage than other areas of the nation.Often it has been said that the most successful example of integration is the military. Surely appealing to this successful model is more honorable and optimistic than putting divisive symbols on pickup trucks.

3. Yeah, they just love military folks down there
like McCain in South Carolina and Cleland in Jaw-ja.

The doctor and the general--covers everything that could go wrong!
Talk about security issues!

5. Don't forget Al Gore
He served honorably in Vietnam while Bush was AWOL. Nobody in the solid south seemed to give a shit about that.

I think Clark would make a very strong candidate by the way...

12. Big difference. McCain didn't know Bush's AWOL story at the time.
Bush will not be able to escape it in the general election this time. Especially after his flyboy stunt.

There was peace back in 2000, and noone paid much attention to military matters as much as they will in 2004.

13. I find that very hard to believe
The only big story on this ran in April I will admit but this was an open secret in Texas and among some Texan military figures. Surely one of them filled in McCain.

6. Surely not caving in to the South's obsessive fetish with the military is
more honorable and optimistic than submitting to it.

Yeah. Right up to a "transfer tube" after making the ultimate sacrifice for some multinational or a president's ego.

11. More honorable than what?
"more honorable and optimistic than putting divisive symbols on pickup trucks"

Are you comparing if running Clark is more honorable than a guy in the south puttin a flag on his pickup?

Holy Shit!

Apples and Oranges type bashing...

14. I've been one of the few South defenders in all these threads
But Southern "patriotism" is largely of the shallow, jingoistic, Ronnie Raygun, Lee Greenwood, neocon/GOP variety. They just buy whatever Gingrich et al are selling, and have done for a generation now.

That's why they dump real vets and support Chickenhawks.

24. Exactly
I am not sure it would give us any advantage. It might, but only if Iraq gets worse and the military man has some much better ideas.

You are probably better off locking down the more cosmopolitan areas than competing out in the sticks.

15. The dems have a lot of true veterans running
Who did their time in the trenches as a common man, yet the south still as a whole votes for GOP candidates.

Here's a hint from Al Gore, who did his time in Vietnam: stop pushing gun control and you can get their votes.

17. Military is all about guns and weapons
It is a good place to play with guns, right Bill from Buckhead? that is where we legitimatize our killing, after all those weapons are for hunting deer.

18. Maybe the right one
If he makes remarks like Clark and suggests they join the Army to play with guns it may not go over well with those that have served and now just want to play with their own guns.

21. define assualt weapon
Most if not all semi-auto guns could be defined as "assualt weapons" under the fuzzy ban implemented in the early 90's.

23. If it works
There is no predicting that it would. Retired Military man against our 'valorous' Commander in Thief. Shrubbie* knows how to wrap himself in the flag just fine.

I am not sure a military man gives us all that much advantage.
