What OS / Web server do the candidates use? Find inside.
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=7239&mode=thread&order=0

The scoop:

# Wesley Clark: Apache on Linux
# Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD
# John Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"
# Richard Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000
# John Kerry: Apache on Linux
# Dennis Kucinich Apache on Linux
# Carol Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD
# Al Sharpton: Apache on Solaris 8
# Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD

And, to absolutely everybody's surprise... (NOT!)

# George W. Bush: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

1. So Edwards and Gephardt are wasting our donations
to give to Microsoft. That really sucks. Especially considering the BSD/Apache option is 100% FREE.

2. Braun, Dean and Lieberman all use FreeBSD...
...while Edwards, Gep and Bush use IIS on win2k.

And Sharpton on a Sun Solaris, huh?

Netware John.E?

Now what were there answers to PC or Mac? Did any of them say SUSE or Slackware? That woulda been hip and shnizit...

5. Dean impresses
"# Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD"

Have to admit it's kind of impressive that Dean's actually using a web server based on BSD :) Truly admirable.

One caveat
If you check Netcraft (www.netcraft.com), you'll see that Howard Dean was running Win2k/IIS 5.0 up until earlier this year. Thankfully his folk has the foresight to make the switch to FreeBSD/Apache, the best damned web server combination in the world IMHO.

(DISCLOSURE: I'm a perfeshunal web developer who has worked on a number of platforms. Currently I do ASP dev on Win2k/IIS for a tech/software company whose products run on the Windows platform. I also recently revamped the www.minnesotaforkucinich.com site, which runs on an open-source platform. The site also uses W3C-compliant markup to make the site WAI-Level 1 accessible-- it will be Level 2 shortly, once I get a spare weekend. :) )

9. You have to remember.
While this is what their sites are on, they may not have any control over this due to whichever hosting provider they've chosen to host their sites.

It is refreshing to see that many of those providers are using Non-MS OS's though.

10. More important...
Which candidates are attacking Microsoft and promoting open-source software in their campaigns? More than hip, that would almost be a first!

Check out my new website at http://www.freedomware.us/ I've scarcely begun to develop it, but you can see where it's headed.
