Had a thought, wanna take over the world?
Here's how DU goes about it. We start a charity. That is, one where DU members raise funds for the express purpose of helping to support the families of troops overseas. The professional soldier don't make a damn anyway, and has a hard enough time even in peace. And now the poor bastard reservists have to go from regular money to GI pay for a year (or more). I am an old fart with real serious problems like family members dying, no work since Feb. (used to be high end software coder), huge credit problems, wife trying to find work after years of depression, scraping by as best we can, and I tell you that as screwed over as I am I do not have it as bad as some of these children of the troops. We got us a group of soldiers soon to be going from Ft. Lewis. I will personally set up a pay pal account and personally give it to the base people for distribution, or whatever. I am poor at the moment, but I can spare 10 bucks for someone else who is suffering far worse from Bushies brainfarts than am I.

Never done something like this before. How does one get started?

Oh, just imagine what happens when press gets wind of grassroots radical leftists democrats socialist peacenuts raising money for the families of those serving.....eh?

just a thought.

1. I don't have anything constructive to add
Mainly because this is a really good idea and I can't think of a way to improve it right now.

But I know someone can. So I am glad to kick this.

2. I love it
order the irs package on 501c tax exempt organizations

then start with a set of bylaws and a board of directors.

Then start asking for money but make sure you comply with the laws in yoiur statre re: accounting.

Maybe affilitate with a 501c3 organization who is doing this already amd raise funds FOR them.

3. You can also get a currently tax-exempt org. to put you under
its umbrella while you go through the paperwork for your own tax exempt status.
Nonprofit incorp & tax exempt filings do cost a little--a few hundred $$, I think, so you will want to get a few people to kick in some starter $$. PM me when you're ready. I'll throw in a few bucks when you get the paypal thingie going.
