When should I start registering people? |
|
I've been hatching this plan....
I live in a small enough town that I figure I can spend a day, maybe two, and hit every house and try to make sure they're registered to vote, encourage them to vote, etc.
When's the best time to do this sort of thing, to best ensure they'll actually go to the polls? Aaaaand, should I try to sway them in any direction, or just stick with the plan to get them to turn out?

Register them now, then put little fliers in their mailboxes reminding them to vote in the spring. Make sure you put the location of the polling place on the flier, and let them know you only need a drivers licence to vote.
When the General election 04 approaches, walk your neighborhood again and personally ask them to vote, repeating what you put on the flier. Or put out another flier and also walk around.
DONE.

2. I don't know when Colorado's cutoff is, but some places have to be |

registered 6 months ahead of time to vote in the primaries. It's not like they're going to lose their right to vote by next year....register people NOW!!

I mean, I know I'm doing my own thing -- but I can't exactly yank back the registration form when they say something I don't agree with, can I?
(Edited to add): Ah, but you're tombstoned...

7. I have always gotten people to register... |
|
by just asking them to participate in democracy.
I NEVER express my political views to potential registrees, (unless asked; even then I generally decline politely), it obfuscates why you are there. People tend to feel threatened when confrontede with political ideology they might not agree with., and the object is to get people to the polls.
I figure it is, in essence, the candidates job to present why he/she should be elected. I will chime in if asked, but I will not be overbearing, after all, I want these people to vote their conscience, just as I do, I certainly don't like it when a 'pug' tries to get me to vote their way.
You are about to embark on true Grassroots Democracy. Be prepared for a little hazing and a few that are downright hostile, but the more you get to register and then vote, the better off the country is. I wish you success, I've been there for a long time.
:kick: for those that walk the walk of democracy!

6. Yes ! Someone else is doing what I am doing ! |

Most sure you visit the elderly as well and let them know that if they have no transportation to get to the polling places , that someone will help them . Make a plan that makes every neighbor gets their neighbor to vote , chain list . But make sure that not only they are registered but that they actually go on election day .:toast:
