Is Texas America? by MOLLY IVINS
Austin, Texas
Well, sheesh. I don't know whether to warn you that because George Dubya Bush is President the whole damn country is about to be turned into Texas (a singularly horrible fate: as the country song has it: "Lubbock on Everythang") or if I should try to stand up for us and convince the rest of the country we're not all that insane.
Truth is, I've spent much of my life trying, unsuccessfully, to explode the myths about Texas. One attempts to explain--with all good will, historical evidence, nasty statistics and just a bow of recognition to our racism--that Texas is not The Alamo starring John Wayne. We're not Giant, we ain't a John Ford western. The first real Texan I ever saw on TV was King of the Hill's Boomhauer, the guy who's always drinking beer and you can't understand a word he says.

3. I resent that comment on Houston |
|
I live in Los Angeles, have visited Houston, and I gotta say LA has a lot more over Houston than the weather.
Among other things, the City of LA is overwhelmingly Democratic.
Visit LA! It's not as bad as you think!

Between the traffic, the toxic humidity, and the traffic, Houston is one unattractive place. And we're not even talking about cosmetic stuff!
There are some wonderful eclectic things about Houston, though; I learned gradually from an ex-girlfriend. The international diversity is amazing and I've never had better Indian or Vietnamese food anywhere in the U.S..
Rice Epicurean is also cool, too!

Especially the part about great Indian food, although Devon Avenue here in Chicago would give Houston a run for it's money.
Little VietNam in Houston has some really fantastic eats.
Great people in Houston too. I miss all my friends down there. But I'd never move back in a gazillion years.

I was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. Now I'm in Dallas. For the most part, it is as bad as you think. Highschool Football is king above all.
I live in Dallas now. There is definitely hope in the bigger cities.
