"The Tea is in the Harbor"---Howard Dean
Dean for America's Declaration of Independence

Today in Burlington, Democratic presidential candidate Governor Howard Dean, M.D., signed the below declaration of independence from special interests. The campaign is asking its supporters to sign the declaration at www.deanforamerica.com/declaration, and in the first hour of the declaration, more than 1,000 people signed it:

WHEN IN THE Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

Two centuries ago, our founders brought into this world a new republic. This republic brought to the world a new era of self-government. It ensured the rights of the citizenry and gave them the vote to elect representatives.

Throughout this nation’s history, the American people have struggled to keep their rights and make their government work for them. We have seen the populists, progressives, women, labor, and civil rights movements.

Today our government has become overrun by special interests. Working with President George Bush, they have turned our government into a system that works for the profit of the few not the benefit of the many.

They have in the last two elections flooded our politics with over 5.1 billion dollars in contributions.

They have walked into the Vice-president’s office and written energy legislation that keeps us shackled to fossil fuels.

They have written health care legislation denying access and affordability, and keeping prescriptions away from seniors.

They have purposely misled this nation into an unnecessary war.

WE, therefore, the architects and builders of Dean for America, appealing to the Wise Judgment of the American people on our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these United States, solemnly Publish and Declare, the People of these United States are, and of Right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT OF SPECIAL INTERESTS and that as FREE AND INDEPENDENT CITIZENS, they have full Power to participate, deliberate, pursue the common good, protect their own interest from corruption, and to do all other Acts and Things which INDEPENDENT CITIZENS may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, we mutually pledge to each other to write letters, knock on doors, organize our neighbors, self- fund this effort, and vote.

Signed,

Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

5. You know, zidz, there are a lot of correlations between
what is happening now and what happened back then. I've been thinking about this after reading the Declaration.

It gets more obvious the more you think about it.

And Cap'n: Yours is a very apt phrase for the situation! Thanks for posting this thread.

2. I signed it! Now if only I could find some Dean yard signs.
We have bumper stickers, but things are really rolling now, and we want a yard sign. Does anyone know where to get one?

7. Go to the Dean Mart off the Dean for American Web site
It's actually Demstore.com, but the DeanMart link gets you right to Dean's stuff or just click on http://demstore.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/scstore/Dean/?E+scstore . Look for Lawn or Yard Signs and you can order them now.

6. I'm not sure, but through his blog I've learned that he participates
heavily in the writing of his speeches. He also doesn't use a teleprompter at this point.

He is articulate and able to speak off-the-cuff, but that same gift causes trouble at times. I have no problem with it. Other people do.

9. He writes his own speeches
is what I've read. That was a couple of months ago so maybe as things go along, there will be additional help. But at the time when they were wowing me, I read they were all his own. Sorry, I don't remember the articles I got that from.

16. Delcaration of Independence

I want independence from the gutted IT job market and sunken economy created by George Bu$h's bad economic policy, tax cuts for those who need help the least, and from his continued reckless deficit spending that serves only to help the corporations from which 60% of the Bu$h Plutocracy came.

I want independence from the international image of America as agressor, created by George Bu$h's pretentious pre-emptive occupation of Iraq for whatever reasons his administration chose to go there, they had nothing to do with the 'war on terror' or with 9-11. This, we now know to be true.

I want independence from John Ashcroft's gutting of our Bill of Rights, his curettage of our civil liberties, his thievery of our privacy as Americans.

I want independence from the lies, pretense, secrecy, greed, and self-interest of this cash-n-carry government, who serves itself and its largest wealthy and corporate contributors before it serves We the People.

I want my country back. I want our Democratic Republic back. I want peace and prosperity back. I want my civil liberties and my privacy back. I want my professional livlihood I worked for 12 years to build upon, back. I want our JOBS back - NOT sold to to the lowest bidders from China, Mexico, and India while Americans are left unemployed for years at a time.

I want an ELECTED President, not a putsched *resident whose ego and privilege far outweighs his intelligence and qualifications to lead this nation as anything other than a dictator.

Next Presidental election, I want independence from a spoilt brat whose friends in high places served to cleanse voters from the voter rolls, manipulate vote tallies, and whose largest corporate contributors build vote-counting machines in black-hole vacuums with no audit trail or public scrutiny - machines that were and are known to be suceptible to tampering.

I want independence from an admistration that reeks of Conflict of Interest from stem to stern, yet expects Americans not to care or to be so utterly gullible as not to find those blatant conflicts extremely arrogant, and extremely suspect.

I want Howard Dean in the Oval Office, though I do not envy him the job of cleaning up the diplomatic, economic, and social disaster that George Bu$h will leave behind for him to deal with.
