What has the GOP done for the South lately?
It has convinced a large number of poor Southern white males that the Democratic Party wants to tax *them* to pay for the elevation of African-Americans; it has turned the words "tax" and "social programs" into racist code words. It has, thus, duped this large number of Southerners into believing that the Democratic program of equalizing opportunity does not apply to them. It has furthermore convinced them that the Democratic party wants to "educate them" into thinking "correctly" about race and religion, wants, in other words, to tell them how to think. So this large class of Southerners has become hostile even to the idea of free public education as a social right for all children, thus making one of the more visible and universal benefits of paying taxes into a burden and an ill.

What has the GOP done for the South lately? It's bought it, duped it, and made it serve the interests of the plutocrats who own the party.

1. That is Dean's question and I think it's a provocative one.

3. Great question
I don't attempt to know what the south is but the last time I was in Atlanta on business it was a pretty hip area. I saw a multitude of people who didn't go around with the Confederate flag on their trucks.

Again I'm not a southerner so I don't know but I guess treating the South with some respect that they are not just a bunch of rednecks would be a start.

4. Why, it's kept black people down! Duh!

That's what the Southern Strategy was all about: protecting white people from black people. "Don't you worry, Southern whites, we'll keep that mean ol' black boogeyman from taking your jobs. All you've gotta do is sell your soul to Satan (read: vote GOP)!"

5. This is even more illuminating to me than Dean's statements
and much more worrisome.

Yikes.

6. Yes it is MUCH MORE WORRISOME
The Democratic party, If it is to be believed by its front runner. Thinks the south is just one big conglomerate of unthinking whites that only care bout a dead flag and they need to have a democrat save them. The south has to stop voting on "race, God, Guns, and Gays". This guy (Dean) needs to admit himself for help. He in the last week has destroyed any chance he has to win the southern vote. What a freakin idiot!!! All I have to say.
