And what do you think he will say? Will he mention te economic numbers? What will he say about the situation in Iraq?

4. He will probably talk about neither, here is what the speech is about:
In this, his third major speech on the Administration's response to terrorism, Mr. Gore will describe the Administration's assault on our civil liberties as un-American and will charge that the Bush/Ashcroft attack on the Constitution is actually a smokescreen that obscures the Administration’s fundamental failure to meaningfully protect our national security, and that their efforts have weakened rather than strengthened America.

In August, Mr. Gore delivered a speech sponsored by MoveOn that opened a space for other leaders to speak out against the Bush Administration's deliberate use of false impressions to mislead the nation on war, taxes, the economy and the environment. That speech did nothing less than shift the terms of the national debate, and we expect this speech to have as big an impact.

5. I think Gore has had time to think about why he's not president
And he knows that the media has been tearing this democracy apart right next to the Bush administration. And that they are a very real enemy of the people.

Gore is a very careful, intelligent speaker. He gave a speech a while back in which he persistently referred to the Bush administration's 'false impressions', we knew he meant lies.

I hope Gore knows, this is probably the last speech of any great importance he is going to give which will really get the attention of the media. He has said he will endorse a candidate, so I expect that to come today.

And I hope to GOD that he endorses Dennis Kucinich, and sees the true Democrat in the midst of the establishment, and I hope to GOD that he doesn't waste his effect on public opinion by supporting his old buddy Dick Gephardt: The day Dick Gephardt voted for the war, and stood next to Bush in support of the war, was the darkest day for the Democratic party, except perhaps the asassination of JFK, but then that didn't have the effect of splitting the party.

Just some thoughts. Thanks for posting this, I will be there.

6. I doubt that Gore will endorse anyone, let alone Kucinich
who sits consistantly in the polling cellar.

I think that Gore will wait until the primaries sort out the winner. I'd be very surprised if he endorses anyone today.

If Gore does endorse, I'm sure it will be Howard Dean. Dean's campaign is the living embodiment of Gore's 2000 theme -- The People vs The Powerful.

81. 911 info
aug..2001...2 terrorists...used their own real names...were on INS watchlists...they were suspects and if they had names and names were checked they would have been a tipped off...the analysts would have discovered that other terrorists had same addresses..They would have discovered other info like phone#'s and 5 other terrorists....then they could have found the rest of the highjackers...2 of the terrorists...were in San Diego...living with their REAL names, phone registered in their own names...what we need is better and more timely info about THOSE people...NOT the American people. CIA agent said, "We are looking for a needle in a haystack and he keeps piling more hay on the haystack."

95. He made the point that it's more analysis that's needed..
...not more information. As he pointed out (and detailed), there was plenty of *information* available about the plot to pull off the 9/11 attacks, but apparently the information (ie., 'the dots') was never put together (for example, nobody looked in the phone book...).

He tied it into the fact that the Patriot act (the official theme of this speech), does NOT improve security, and may hinder efforts by focusing too much on raw data collection (and not providing the analytical support to process the data).

Just a topical recap for those playing along at home...

110. The Agressive, Ideological Approach of the Current Administration...
... today is the most worrisome new factor, which seems determined to use fear as a political tool, to consolidate its power and escape any accountability for its use.

<APPLAUSE>

Just as unilateralism and dominance are the guiding principles of their disastrous approach to international relations, they are also the guiding impulses of the administration's approach to domestic politics. They are impatient with any obstacles to the use of their power both home and abroad (paraphrasing).

Apparently he's been moving to establish some kind of Liberal media network for some time. Maybe this has been evolving since the Bush appointment. Anybody who was at all canny at the time undsrstood immediately what was going on in Florida -- especially Al Gore.

I think (and hope) we may have just watched the launching of a cultural counter-offensive. I'd like to think Mr. Gore and his powerful friends can get this message out there successfully and maybe we'll see a New Liberty movement...did I say that? I meant a New Liberal movement.

At least that's my fantasy about this terrific and important declaration.

Bravo

I only wish he wasn't preaching to the choir--we need for moderates and less certain repugs to hear this speech and absorb its contents in order to show them the light. Some hardcore repubs will never "get it" but perhaps those on the edge will finally see the truth. It's been so obfuscated by the right that it's difficult to know what the true light is.

Wake up and fight, everyone. And if you're already fighting, fight harder!!

Al Gore:

"The Constitution includes no wartime exception, though its framers knew well the reality of war. And as Justice Holmes reminded us shortly before World War I, 'The Constitution's principles only have value if we apply them in the difficult times, as well as those when it matters less.' Will we continue to live as a people under the rule of law as embodied in our Constitution, or will we fall? Will we fail future generations by leaving them a Constitution far diminished from the charter of liberty that we inherited from our forebearers? Our choice is clear. Thank you for coming today."

i was in tears and am still shaking my head wondering how is he not president.

let the words ring out, and let the current democratic candidates listen and use what al gore gave us today.

while watching al gore today i realized fully that the current candidates are not as good as him; as candidates for the presidency, as one who believes in what i believe, and most importantly, as one who can articulate these core values.

i am hoping for an open convention in boston, and want al gore as my candidate. he will do better against bush than any other person the democrats could run.

A brilliant speech, although I felt sad and angry throughout that he isn't running next year. If our country is indeed as threatened as he said - and I fully believe that to be true - is there anything more important than running in 2004? What's the real priority?

So, we're left with Edwards and Dean and Kerry and Lieberman bickering about the Confederate flag. Goddamn it.

I'll get it straight next time - Dean made a ridiculous, offensive comment that opened up the (justified) bickering. He refused to repudiate his comments and then 'slept on it' and repudiated them. Real leadership.

Let's focus on Gore's speech here, and not turn this into a candidate debate. My point was that there isn't anyone else in the party with Gore's qualifications, credentials, or ability and it's a damn shame he's not in the race.

198. Standing O, Mr. President. Thank you!
As for drafting Gore for 2004, let's be sensible. Gore chose not to run. He has good reason for this decision. Our country is split down the middle politically. Because of 2000 Election, Gore is too contraversial for 2004. What we need to understand is what Gore already understands. If we are going to win in 2004, there must be a new voice that emerges from the darknes and has few if any ties to the past. Gore has a future, I believe. If he chose to run, I'd seriously consider voting for him again. BUT, it's not my vote that the opposition needs. It's the swing votes. Carefully planning and strategizing must be made. And, I'm glad that our current President recognizes this and has the fortitude and patriotism to do the right thing in helping us win in 2004 by not running.

Gore really nailed the evil that Bush and his cabal are doing to our country. I hope all nine of our candidates see this speech on tape. There is a lot of substance there.

I was hearing echoes of 1992--what's down is up and what should be up is down--and the message is even more poignant and critical today.

Damn it--I miss Al Gore. He has grown in wisdom and character.
