Are the Petro-Imperialists getting more mainstream?
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 05:52 PM by SilasSoule
Wingers on other boards I post on are increasingly trying to mainstream and justify the IRAQ fiasco for the procurement of oil.

For example when confronted by me and asked How Saddam Hussein threatened my freedom to post on internet message boards many of them respond that because Saddam controlled vast amounts of Oil that we could not control, that was a threat to my rights as a free American.

Example:

That a destabilized Middle East would, through an admittedly indirect chain of impact, eventually have an effect on your ability to sit in your heated or air-conditioned (depending on your location) home, sit down in your synthetic chair (made from petroleum products), power up your computer that a vehicle (yours or otherwise) powered by gasoline or diesel delivered to your door using electricity more likely than not generated by the burning of fossil fuels, and post that message? Now, you might be using hydroelectric power in your home, peanut oil to power your entirely plastic and oil-free car, and wear nothing but home killed and produced fabrics. If so, my hat is off to you. If not, then yes, he DID, in however minor a fashion, affect your right and ability to sit there and post.

Is this war about oil? In a large part, yes. Absolutely. News flash, folks - we need oil. Russian oil, South American oil, Domestic oil, and MIddle Eastern oil. And if Europe is the primary consumer of Middle Eastern oil, where will they turn when those wells either dry up or the flow is shut off? Think that might, just might, affect prices here? I dunno, but if I were a betting man.......

I'm seeing more and more wingnuts outright declare that all the natural resources on the planet are somehow justifiably ours. I just don't understand how we could have got this far out there this fast.

1. Me Neither
There is no justification of it. It's a filthy campaign. I think we are about to see a split in the Democratic party, and that fortunately would be justified.

2. It used to be that imperialists were stealth
And you are correct - today they are increasingly public about resource theft as justifiable.

The problem with their stance is two fold. One, it's outright theft which is supposed to go aganist their precious Ten Commmandment "morals". Two, in a world of shrinking resources and growing population, they are looking at increasingly hostile and virule resistance against their attempt to steal the world's resources for America's comfort.

And to put the lie to a common political adage today, we do NOT have a "right" to our lifestyle. Never did. We only have a right to haggle for what we can buy.

Lastly, you are correct in that this fundamental issue will split the Democrats and happily so. I am looking eagerly to the day in which we flush all hiding imperialists and military-for-corpos criminals out of the party.

3. Most all wars are over RESOURCES.
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 06:09 PM by TennesseeWalker
The fact that ANYone thought that this war was about an imminent threat to the most powerful country the world has ever known is absurd.

Most learned folks predict Peak Oil in 2015 or thereabouts. We won't be out of oil, but it will cost a whole lot more to get energy out of than it does now. Thus, prices skyrocket, and the American Economy, predicated on cheap oil, will go down in flames. This would be BEYOND the Great Depression. It would be truly cataclysmic.

The Neocons know this. They're trying to buy time and use our power to extend their dreams. I'm sure "America's Welfare" is in there somewhere, but it sure isn't where it should be....transitioning to a sustainable future. Sustainability means a drastic pullback from the motorized society we have now.

Whether anyone wants to believe it or not, it's a reality. The party's over.

5. The earth and all its resources are the property of the US

to do with what it pleases, just like women's bodies.

This is not new, and cannot be changed without altering the status quo, which neither the corporate oligarchy or the voting class wishes to do.

6. petrolfascism
this is the war for the last of the earth's bounty brought to you by the wonderful "i like when brown people die so i can fill my hummer" crowd. and make no mistake, murder is not an unfortunate consequence of resource theft, they like death.
