"Do you like George Bush as a person?"
Democrats are tricked by this question all the time. Tim Russert asked John Edwards this question this AM on MTP. To his credit, Edwards never gave the response that the Democrats usually give, which is, "Yeah, he's a likeable person and people like him...etc" No, he's not a likeable person! He's a real obnoxious and arrogant person that should not be in the WH. There's no need to lie about him. When asked by media people like Russert and others, Democrats need to be more honest with their response.

82. A Sincere Man
I believe GW Bu$h*t is sincere, and passionate about his vision of America. I feel that he want's to restore this country to what it once was--A barren, frozen tundra of a wasteland, inhabited by cave dwellers.
And in his charming little way I believe that he will fullfill that vision. Other than that I feel that he is a brain dead monkey, and living proof that partial abortions can survive.

12. Don't be so sure.
He had NOTHING to offer substantially in 2000. But he got close enough to Gore to steal the election. That implies to me that millions of voters simply LIKED him better than Gore. As ideologues, we can't understand that, but we had better, before 2004.

31. Of course.
None of us have personal knowledge of him. Without the media, we wouldn't even know who is in the occupied WH.

And they also fell for the media trashed version of Gore. I am simply talking about the millions of apolitical voters; their criteria are profoundly different from ours.

10. Sadly, millions of voters choose by that very criterion.
And we had better understand that. We could nominate the perfect candidate, one whose views on the issues coincided perfectly with 75% of voters, but if they don't LIKE him, he will lose.

What is there to like?
And I am not talking about anything to do with his policies, mind you.

42. Yeah, I wonder...
maybe he's a dick in private as well. He's someone who's never had to face any, as in none, zero, hard times in his life. Ok, his daughters have appeared on some "Girls Gone Wild" videos (well, maybe not yet). His parents are both still alive, brother Jeb is doing just a "fantastic" job as gov. of Florida. Everything is just so fucking wonderful for Boy Bonehead. I think he needs a massive dose of humility to finally get in touch with the real world. He needs to see how everything isn't just going to fall into his lap. I hate this guy with a passion and I'm one who's always thought that hating is such a waste of time and energy.

Leading his guests through the Alpine heather to the tea house, presiding over the cream cakes and coffee, etc. Except that he kept far different hours than did his retinue, kept them up til 5 AM, and then he slept til noon every day, when they could not.

But of course, we know different about him now. I wonder if bush does the same thing???

22. I would invite...
...him over for dinner, so I could tell him exactly what I thought of him.

I rarely use hate when I talk about anyone, but this is one guy I truly hate.

He is a self loathing rich boy, who has had everything given to him on a silver platter. He has absolutely no idea what hard work and living from cheque to cheque is all about. He values the worth of a persons life by how much money they hold in the bank.

And the biggest thing of all I cannot stand about him is, he is a liar. That is something I loath in people. I have been accused of lying to much, only for the person accusing me of it to find out I was infact telling the truth to begin with.

That is one man who is surely going to burn in hell.

And dinner at my place won't no $25k barbieque that John Howard served up to him at the Australian tax payers expense.

24. George is too stupid for my taste
sorry there is nothing about him that I consider redeemable. His frumpy wife displays a very poor interest in the way she looks and seems to be under some sort of terrible restrictions. That is not the melieu of a loved and wanted woman. He probably is as cold as ice toward her-he called her a lump and he referred to her as sweeping the porch in Crawford when they were expecting dignitaries and important guests-and she is too frightened or too used to the luxury of being married to a very rich man with a very rich family, to do anything else but be concerned about her nail polish--for sure she is not concerned about how she looks. Ugh--those gowns with the belly bow--ugh those utterly frumpy suits and that hair that always looks as though it has not been washed in a week or more. We pay for her to travel all over th world and she has let us down--with her unconcern and her dowdiness.

When the populace judges a president, they don't have first-hand knowledge of him; therefore, they must rely on the image he sets forth, and MANY people see him as an arrogant, dishonest, hypocritical asshole--that's my opinion and the opinion of many people here.

Have you met him?

49. he's a "media creation"! He said so himself!

Karl Rove stated in an interview that because most people are confused by the policies, they are more likely to decide to vote based on whether or not they like the candidate. So the Bushies decided to focus on making George W. appear more personable -- never mind making sure he's competent or informed.

Here is an excellent article about this: "The Selling of George Bush". They are doing the exact same thing this time around!
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/2000/07/17/bush.html

They have spent vast amounts of money and effort. The Bush on TV is essentially a fictional character ... it's like being asked whether you like Frasier Crane "as a person" because he isn't real either.

George W. Bush, before he was made into the GOP figurehead, would have been only just tolerable as a next-door neighbour. Once he was governor/president -- I would NOT want to be anywhere near him. There are certain people who just shouldn't be allowed into public office, and he's one of them.

58. This will probably get me in trouble but,
it never stopped me before! :) I read a Newsweek article about how the shrub decided to bring "religion" into his campaign. He was campaigning at the time and in a speech he quoted some common phrase from the bible. Then Rove started getting phone calls from the Christian right telling him how WONDERFUL it was and told him that religion would be the way to get the RWers to fall in step and win the election. It was soon thereafter that the shrub went to the Bob Jones University....and THAT he how he started being "publicly" religious. He's one big walking facade.

Remember when Bush allegedly said that his favorite philosopher was Jesus?

I've always wondered about that. The transcripts don't show the exact context ... I think what happened was that the interviewer asked, "Who's your favorite philosopher?" And Bush completely blanked, thinking "Oh no! Karl didn't tell me about this one! What do I do now? Jesus!!!"

He tends to talk to himself when he's upset, but he was so frantic, only the last word came out -- so Dubya gets the reputation for being thoughtful and devout.

If you don't like someone, you don't like them and can tactfully say so. It doesn't mean that other assholes won't like him, it just means that you don't. Phoniness isn't synonymous for grace, or good manners.

Good for John!! Dick Gephardt (on Hardball w/Tweety) said he comes across as "likeable", but that he, personally, doesn't like him... good for Dick!!

I've never seen george bush the person, that is of course if you're refering to person as a human being with qualities that human beings have, such as feelings, rational thought processes, understanding, and a sense of right or wrong.....No I don't believe I would even like that version of george bush.

60. Oy!
Bush was the wet towel snapper in the locker room; he was the guy who dropped his pencil so he could look under a girl's skirt; he was the guy who stole the tests and sold copies to his buddies; he was the guy who brushed up against every girl so he could feel their "boobs". He was the rich fuck-off who everyone liked because he bought the keg. Like him as a person...I think in order to achieve "personhood" one much have curiosity, convictions, a heart and a soul. Bush has none of these qualities so the answer is NO!

I don't think I'd like him. I like people I can talk to an an higher level of intelligence than I believe he is capable. Also, Mr. Bush displays a sense of privilege that I would resent.

However, I am aware that Molly Ivins claims to have known him since high school and says he is, in fact, a likeable fellow in spite of those shortcomings.

73. Edwards reply (from transcript):
MR. RUSSERT: Despite the way people may feel about the economy or the war in Iraq, the underpinnings of the polls seem to be that people like George Bush as a person. Do you agree with that?

SEN. EDWARDS: You mean, do I like him as a person, or do I think other people like him as a person?

MR. RUSSERT: Both. Oh, answer them both, yeah.

SEN. EDWARDS: Well, I think other people do generally like George Bush as a person. I don’t know him that well. I’ve been around him sometimes. He seems like a personable guy. But I think at the end of the day, when people get ready to vote in the election, when voters in America get ready to decide this election in 2004, they’re going to be looking at a lot more than whether they like him. He’s going to be held responsible. This is not like 2000. He’s been the president of the United States for four years. He has resided over an economy—he will probably be the first president since Herbert Hoover to have negative job—in other words, to have job loss during the period of his presidency. And simultaneously with that, I might add, he’s driven us deeper and deeper into deficit. I mean, in theory, tax cuts and spending, which puts you in deficit or for the purpose of job creation. Well, he’s managed to lose jobs and drive us deeper into deficit at exactly the same time.

MR. RUSSERT: We have to stop there. Senator John Edwards, thanks for joining us.

This was a great answer. It's not the personality, it's the politics, but you're gonna dislike the person once you look at the policies.

Also, did Edwards intentionally say "reside"?

75. This is such a seemingly innocent and easy question, but
Edited on Sun Nov-09-03 09:44 PM by Nay
it really isn't. First, as many have pointed out here, we have never met the guy, so we really don't know whether we 'like' him or not. We suspect we would dislike him personally because his actions, speech, mannerisms, and political policies make us sick. And we would probably be correct to assume we would dislike him personally.

But consider the people who say they LIKE him. A co-worker once said to me about Bush: "Oh, I just love him and his family."

I turned around and said without thinking: "Really? When did you meet any of them?" I said this just straight out of my head, which gives you some insight into how I was thinking -- I find it normal to separate out the ideas of "liking/loving" (which belong in the personal and up-close realm of life) and "approving of" (which most accurately can be applied in the case of a politician whom you are talking about). But my co-worker seems unable or unwilling to separate these feelings. And these feelings will lead her like a cow to slaughter -- if she likes Bush, he can't be bad -- after all, she is a good person and would not like a bad person, so he must be good. See how it works? She has the same problem with Arnold as well; she liked him so much in "Kindergarten Cops" and the Terminator movies that she is unable to separate that image from her conception of how he will be as governor of CA.

Me? I have no trouble separating the person from the role, whether that role is a movie part or a staged TV production crafted to make a politician look like a compassionate conservative. I have no trouble looking at persons' actions to evaluate my feelings for them. Many others see the superficial image presented to them and swallow it whole. After all, nearly everyone alive has been advertised to for their whole existence, and it works on them better than it works on us.

There is something we pick up from Bush that makes most of us profoundly uneasy, and we listen to that feeling. We didn't start out hating the guy -- we learned to hate him. But he made us all uneasy first, with his mannerisms, tortured speech, etc. We have better antennae, or are better readers of body language, or something. That's why we are astounded when people watch Bush and talk about how much they like him. We watch him and feel waves of unease and queasiness come over us. I believe our feelings are correct, because Bush and his bunch are aiming to do the country in. But it would be valuable to find out why he doesn't evoke the same visceral repulsion in the rest of the population.

He's an incurious wastrel. He's never been interested in anything beyond himself and his small circle of BFEE brethren. Wasted his youth driving around on back roads getting drunk when he was fortunate enough to have ample resources to go out and discover every corner of the world. What's so special about being a "nice guy" on a personal level? I know lots of people like that. It's not a qualification for public office.

Furthermore, there's nothing likeable about him. He's an arrogant, mean, vile pile of shit.

but to deny the obvious, that a substantial number of people do indeed like him, is something we do at our peril. I liked the answer Edwards gave. The only problem is that if Rove is Rove Edwards will find himself with the President a good deal more so he can't give that very good answer again. I think the best answer to give is that he is personable but just the worst President on earth.

101. As a Texan, I've had a head start on disliking him.
You've seen the words before: clueless, fratboy, trust-fundie. Just a cold feeling of dislike--I've known his kind.

About all those folks who haven't met him but say they "like" him--is that their real opinion or is that what they think they ought to feel? If people hear something often enough, they tend to go along with it. It's the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome.

A few weeks after 9/11, I was discussing things with a friend. We were both trying to limit our TV-watching time. I volunteered that, even so, I had to lunge for the remote every time Doofus came on. She looked a bit shocked, then said only one other person she knew had that reaction to him. She thought another moment--& decided that she did, too.
