1. He considered running in 2000.
Not in '96. I can't remember where I saw that, but I remember hearing it.

From just a few days before 9/11:

Speculation that Dean would run for the presidency in 2004 was fueled on Wednesday when he announced somewhat abruptly that he would be stepping down as governor in 2003, after serving 11 years in the office.

Dean, who briefly considered running for president in 2000, would not talk about what his future plans may be. Two prospects have been floated so far — a run for the presidency of the United States and taking over the reins at the University of Vermont.


I've also read that he actually met with Gore in '99 or so before making the decision not to run.
