John Kerry Fires Campaign Manager in Effort to Revitalize Campaign
John Kerry Fires Campaign Manager

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), trying to jump start his ailing bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, has fired his campaign manager, sources said Monday.

Kerry released a statement saying he made a change, and that campaign manager Jim Jordan's job was being given to veteran Democratic operative Mary Beth Cahill and that Jordan was being offered another position.

Two senior campaign officials speaking on condition of anonymity had told The Associated Press earlier the decision to oust Jordan was made jointly by Kerry and his campaign chairman, former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Kerry told Jordan the reason he was removed was because changes were needed in the campaign. Kerry has been trailing considerably behind former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean (news - web sites) in the polls.

"From the bottom of my heart, I thank Jim Jordan for his leadership, extremely hard work, unsurpassed loyalty and devotion to me, to this campaign, and to the people who have worked with him," Kerry said in the statement.

Kerry said he has asked Jordan to remain as a senior strategist "as we enter this critical phase of the campaign."

An official close to Jordan, who asked not to be publicly identified, said it was unclear whether Jordan would accept the offer.

1. Isn't this the second staff shake-up that Kerry's had?
I can't remember. It's too cold here this morning to think.

I'm shivering and the wind is coming in through the window cracks of my college room! All heat is mostly reserved for keeping my body warm instead of my brain as of this moment...

2. I wonder if it was Jordan's idea to start talking about gun control in NH
Whoever gave him the advise to do that should be fired.

3. Two things...
1) It's about time. His campaign has been awful from the start.

2) Unfortunately for Kerry, this could be the death rattle. Not many second chances in elections like this. You choose your manager VERY wisely the first time, because it could all be over in a heartbeat. Hell, I haven't chosen one yet for this exact reason. I don't want to settle for anything soft.

6. The real question here is,
"Is this too little too late?"

It's going to be a tough road to hoe trying to get past the momentum that has been built up in other campaigns.

7. we'll see what happens
It's a lot like when Kerry made his announcement to run for the President officially after running unofficially for months. I think about a hundred supporters showed up at that event...

9. As I've said all along...
I know this analogy may cause Senator Kerry some concern, but...

Howard Dean is the 1978 Boston Red Sox
John Kerry is the 1978 New York Yankees
George Steinbrenner just fired Billy Martin...

You all know how that one ended.

Never talk before the season is over.

And fellow Kerry supporters, may the spirit of Bucky Dent be with us all!

12. It's just spin...
....never mind about the analogies.

It's common among teams in potential peril...they try to compare themselves to things in history thatthey know turned out OK. Human nature, really.

11. actually since Dean is from NY, Kerry is from Boston.......
I would use a different analogy, I think.
