Official Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev) Filibuster Thread
This needs a new thread to perk it up, meethinks.

Currently on CSPAN...hes refusing to yeild the floor in protest of the Rethug plan for the 30 hour judicial debate.

Hes now in a pitch and toss of softball questions to easily explain it to the Ruthugs with Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill)

9. WOO HOO!
Call his office and say HURRAH! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

Bush has had MANY judicial nominees confirmed, the ratio of those confirmed to those 'obstructed' is FAR better than the GOP had given Clinton, and he was legitimately elected.

12. Was the best part
Dick Durbin went back and forth with him on easy stuff, example:

Durbin (ton o sarcasm): "You know, the Republicans seem to be complaining that there is some sore of disparate number of judicial nominees approved under President Bush. What are the actual numbers?"

Reid: "Well, I'll tell you. A total of four, (holds up four fingers, scans the room) four nominees have not been approved. That's 98%."

Durbin (more sarcasm, so the Reupbs can comprehend it): "Wait, doesn't the Constitution (actually reading from a mini-sized Constitution) say that "the President shall select judicial nominees with the advice and consent of the Congress"? Now if you said that we have approved 98% of judicial nominees, what exactly do our friends on the other side of the aisle think "advise and consent" means?"

13. I think he will hang in there.
He seems to be doing his part first. Probably, the Dem members of the Judiciary Committee will be doing the talking, starting Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. on C-Span2.

By the way, the Senate has so much work to do that they are going to be in session tomorrow, Veterans' Day. That's another reason why the Dems are pissed. So much work to do, then the Repukes take 30 hours to debate judges!!!!

40. Barnes & Noble takes 2 wks to get a copy
He was asked to read more slowly.

On a break from reading we have discover:

Besides the new McDonalds, a curio shop with old mining equipment, rest/casino operation that had 5 cent coffee, now a dime and has hired a new chef, Bill used to cook fish fries for the whole town. Post the specials on the marquee. Pork chops.

1000-1200 people live in the town. If you live on the east side you have a sewer. On the westside no luck.

47. Talking about voting in the Senate
"We vote on things that have little importance here..." (talking about votes) We have votes here all the time, we can have a vote tonight, we can vote tomorrow...

I want it to be said that this 30 hour judges thing is not the way to run things in the Senate. I believe it is not right, when we have so many important things to discuss here, we don't have time to be talking about 4 judges when we have approved 168.

60. Durbin asks what Reid's point is.
He wants to know if Reid hopes there is a vote.

Reid says he doesn't know and doesn't care. He's making the point that the Republicans can't hold people hostage when no one knows if there will be a vote or what the goal of the 30 hour marathon.

It's rude to their colleagues from California.

LMFAO... onto Chapter 6 now!

87. i don't know about that
he told Reid to rock on when he left. I think he did it because he's friends with Reid?
Senators on both sides of the isle do treat each other with respect and are friends.

From the way I see Reid he seems like a pretty easy to get along with guy. I'm just guessing and I have to admit I do despise Republicans. However I tried to not let my dislike for them color my judgement on this course I don't trust any of them any further than I could spit. :) So, you could be right manco nothing these weasels do anymore surprises me and well that's not good considering the things they have done.

I called Reid's office, left a message of thanks and a "Give em' hell Harry"

Senator Levin's on the floor now. Talking about how everyone on both sides of the isle loves Reid. He's going to ask a question about 'Searchlight'

Is in very short supply these days. PLEASE call Senator Reid's office at 202-224-3542 and leave your message of support.

I was thinking today about how frustrating it has been to not have a voice that would be heard, particularly after Wellstone's death and the 2002 election. Maybe Senator Reid's voice is heard right now by just a handful, but we need to praise it.

And when our nominee is chosen, whoever it is, we have to be sure to have a voice that roars with the power of each of us.

Talking about Sandy Levin. Says he has other things to do, but he tried to lay a groundwork in this body that we as the US Senate should be concerned about a number of things, about the things in the chart that are going up... uninsured, national deficit, improverished, etc. instead of things that are going down (number of confirmations of Presidential nominees).

Giving a minilecture on areas of responsibility for the Senate.

Points out that 3 (or 4) of Clinton's nominees went to cloture and required 60 votes for their confirmation. Telling Republicans not to tell him they haven't had a filibuster. Republicans have filibustered Clinton nominations 3 times.

114. No, as Dookus pointed out...
he may not leave the Senate floor.

About filibusters:

Technically, a filibuster is made possible by Senate Rule XIX, the rule governing floor debate, which directs any senator who wants to speak to "rise and address the Presiding Officer." Once recognized by the presiding officer, a senator can keep speaking as long as he or she wishes, day and night, provided that the senator: 1) remain standing and 2) stay in the Senate chamber. This can be hard on: 1) the knees and 2) the bladder, which is why Strom Thurmond deliberately dehydrated himself in a sauna before taking to the floor for 24 hours and 18 minutes to rail against a civil rights bill in 1957.

While orating, a senator is permitted to drink only water or milk—the latter according to a ruling found in the encyclopedic Riddick's Senate Procedure, a 1,500-page volume containing 200 years of rulings on arcane matters of Senate governance. Also, the senator may only speak two separate times on any one issue. Facing these constraints, senators who want to filibuster may tag-team, each sermonizing as long as possible—often until hoarse—before yielding the floor to the next speaker. Everyone is free to deliver a second speech on the issue, after which they can make motions or offer amendments—taking turns expounding upon those, too. The filibuster process can last for weeks or more, the record being 75 days in 1964.

Nor must a senator confine herself to the issue or nominee in question. Under Senate rules, senators can talk about anything when they have the floor. In 1935, Sen. Huey Long of Louisiana suspended passage of a bill by lecturing on the Constitution, section by section. When he ran out of text, he recited recipes for fried oysters and something called "potlikkers." In the early 1990s, Sen. Al D'Amato resorted to song—including, one observer recalls—The Yellow Rose of Texas. And on Wednesday, Sen. Robert Byrd kept tradition alive by reminiscing about the courtship of his wife.

Shame on our young Senators! They need to be watching their true, patriotic comrades!
