Delay wants the NYC Repuke Convention on a Cruise Ship?
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 07:15 PM by leftchick
Did anyone else see that on C-Span today? I just caught the end of it. There was a report from one of those DC gossip rags they go to daily. The Hill I think? The Editor said bug man tom is working a deal with Princess cruise lines to have the convention on their ship rather than a hotel in NYC! Gee, I wonder why they would want that? I checked the web site for them and found no mention. Has anyone else seen or heard about this?

On Edit: Here is a link, you need to pay so I can't get the whole article....http://www.rollcall.com/pub/49_51/news/3544-1.html

<snip>A Floating Convention?
GOP Eyes Cruise Ship for N.Y.C. Housing
By Ben Pershing and John Bresnahan
Roll Call Staff
November 10, 2003

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) and Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) are pushing an ambitious plan to park a luxury cruise ship in New York Harbor to serve as an exclusive floating hotel for lawmakers and lobbyists during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

and we will never have to worry about the whole sorry lot of them again.

Dick Cheney as Skipper
George Bush as Gilligan
Donald Rumsfeld as the Professor
Katherine Harris as Ginger

who else?

They just get everyone onboard and head out to sea and noone can protest except with boats. They'll probably hire the USS Lincoln with a "Bush 2004" banner on it.

9. It's a great idea! If you want to avoid looking at protestors.
Plus, they will get to say that they didn't want to make NYC a prop after 9/11.

I think most New Yorkers are mad at the way the Bush admin lied to them about the air quality after 9/11, and even madder at the way they have not allowed an investigation to go forward.

In order to insulate themselves from the even larger flotilla of protesters that's sure to happen. I should make for some great arial footage...BTW, how many radio-controlled planes and boats do you suppose will be launched against the cruiseship...whatta target.

to have it in NYC when they thought it would be a golden opportunity to cash in on 9/11. As more time passes and more people become aware of what happened the NYC choice is starting too look like a disaster.

Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 07:04 PM by 0rganism
The dock becomes a natural chokepoint, rather than the area around Madison Square Garden.

Having the convention in NYC was questionable at best. Timing it for September 11 was the king of all insults. Moving it into a cruise ship might be the only way to keep millions of irate liberals (aka serfs) from interfering with the procedings.

It sure would be funny if Greenpeace laid seige to their floating castle, tho.

Sort of a combination of "Die Hard" and "The Spy Who Loved Me", I'm thinking, with a dash of "Air Force One" and "Raid on Entebbe" thrown in. Starring Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, and Keanu Reeves. I see a surprise alien species ending inspired by "The Abyss". This one could have box-office legs.

Nothing surprising here... just another ruse to shaft NYC as many ways as possible -- strip business from hotels, restaurants, infrastructure maintenance, parking fees, etc., let alone twisting the location of the 9-11 tragedy to maintain their craven political assault on our country.

And, by the way, a VERY good way to *attempt* to thwart the tremendous protests that are on the horizon for these thieves and charlatans next fall. Can't see those pesky focus groups from out in the harbor, no-siree. And our *media* can't either...snarf.

I heard Tim Curran mention that Princess Cruise Lines is in conference with the Rethugs about this. He casually mentioned that Princess has *offered* the same kind of deal to the Dems for their convention in Boston.

Some of the lobbyists are not only in charge of the financial bribery but are also the lovers of some of the Congressmen. For example Chairman Thomas's mistress is a leading healthcare lobbyist. I do not know whether she knows what healthcare actually is.

http://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-uscrus1111,0,5613251.story?coll=nyc-topheadlines-span

The cruise ship, with accommodations for 2,200 guests and 14 bars and 10 restaurants, would mirror other hospitality suites DeLay (R-Texas) has championed for members of Congress at past conventions. At the 2000 Republican convention in Philadelphia, DeLay secured private railroad cars, where members could meet and mingle with invited guests such as lobbyists -- no media allowed. He also provided members of Congress with cars and drivers. The amenities were funded by corporate contributions to a political action committee.

"It's as if Tom DeLay is the personal concierge for members," said one Republican staffer who refused further identification.

The ship would be provided by Norwegian Cruise Lines and would have amenities such as basketball courts, pools, a spa, movie theaters and jogging tracks. The Dawn normally docks in New York and runs cruises to the Bahamas and Florida.

56. Well, here's your "sympathy attack"...
"Terra-ists" get French Exocet antiship missile, which is known to have been purchased by Iraq, and mount it on a big jon boat. They then drive into New York Harbor at 11am one convention morning, while the Repug delegates and their wives are at Madison Square Garden, and fire the Exocet into the cruise ship.

Cruise ships not being known for hardness against missiles with thousand-pound warheads, the luxury liner goes straight to the bottom. Fortunately for the cleaning crew, the barnacle-scraping team and the kitchen staff, the harbor floor ain't that far below the keel of a ship and most of them escape. Most is not all.

We get to attack Iraq with increased vigor for providing the missile to the terra-ists. We get to attack France with real guns for selling the missile to Iraq. (Never mind that Exocets aren't hard to get on the black market, so it could have come from anywhere, or that Aerospatiale's war materiel division is a bunch of sluts who will sell to anyone who has enough money--including Republicans, hint hint.) And we get four more years of Dubya.

Alternative: Chinese CSS-2 Silkworm missiles, which Iran bought in great numbers. This allows us to bomb Iran in retaliation.

This is different from what real terrorists would do, which is to sink the ship at 3am when the Repugs will all be in bed.

...so they can
a) stiff NYC's economy for the bill, having to pay for cop overtime but not collecting hotel revenues and taxes...

b)keep it extra-private. No reporters with a friend or informant on the staff, who would give tidbits or slip them in. All paid by corpo-dollars (read: you the consumer), not party dollars or by the delegates themselves. (How do you visit New York on $5 a day? Have someone else pay for it!)

I predict some reason will be found to move the convention to the Pig Farm before too long...or maybe they could stage it off Gitmo.

64. no way
There is not a cruise ship in existence that I am aware of that can fit the capacity of Madison Square Garden in one room. Therefore, I believe your article has a few facts confused.

65. Ah, the Ship of Fools!
Sorry, that was irresistable as is:
Titanic
Shipwrecked
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Voyage of the Dammed
The Wackiest Ship in the Army

The possibilities are endless. We need a naming contest!

67. Sounds good to me.
about 2,600 repugs moored to a dock on the West side of town, eh?

Only one way off a dock (while staying dry). No back doors or underground parking garages.

Could be 2,600 repugs having a tough time getting to the Garden, hm?
