White Louisiana Judge Draws Fire For Costume
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 10:05 PM by rumguy
I'm not from the south...and have always wondered why there's so much political focus on it. How come we never hear about the repubs problems connecting with NE voters or W. Coast voters?

Anyway I guess the South is different from the rest of the country if this is just "a tempest in a teapot" down there...

1. calm down, he said it was just a "harmless joke"
Just like all those who died in the race riots.... :eyes:
These are the people that sit on our benches across the South.

3. He should be removed
from the bench immediately! This type of stupidity can not be allowed to thrive. This makes me physically ill. This is why so many black people believe that the judicial system is completely corrupt and racially biased.

4. Whatever . . .
You know, my school newspaper recently did a little section asking students what they dressed up as for Halloween and there was a black dude who went as a white guy. I actually saw him Halloween night, and he had a polo shirt and khakis and what not, but he also had what I assume was chalk all over his skin. What's the difference? Why no outrage over this?

5. Because the kid at your school is not judge
that could have control over a person's life.

6. Outrage... over what?
What part of his costume was a stereotype that denigrated white people as a whole? Was it the khakis he wore? Is that offensive to white people? Oh' goodness me then, please make sure this kid is expelled from school! Where's the Dean... where's the Aryan Nation... where's David Duke when you need him?

Get real!

7. This just infuriates me.
You are being deliberately controversial with that jacked in the head statement. I'm going to leave this thread before I start cursing. You are something else dude.

8. Geez, I don't know
Sorry, but if you can't appreciate the difference between a JUDGE dressing up as a black PRISONER and a student dressing as a white guy, I guess nothing I can say will change your mind. Nonetheless, let me take a stab at this one. What might an African American think about a member of the judiciary in their state dressing up in blackface, and in shackles? Hmmmm....I don't know....perhaps make the feel a tad less confident about how that judge dispenses justice? Ya think? Please tell me you're kidding about this.

17. Oops.
Got myself in some trouble here. My fault, let me clarify.

I'm not saying that this what this judge did was ok. I'd have to say it was pretty stupid and I have no problem seeing how it could be offensive. I didn't know he was wearing prison shackles and all that jazz (my fault again for only reading headlines).

But I still think my question was legitimate. Forget the judge for a second, scroll on down this thread and look at the picture of the frat dudes dressed like gangstas. Also, I'm not saying this is cool.) Now how is that any different from the black guy on my campus dressed like a preppy painting (or dusting) his skin with chalk?

I realize there are certain historical connotations involved with black face, but these kids weren't dressed up in blackface as Vaudevillian (or whatever the correct term is) performers. They were just "gangstas." And I can see how that's offensive, but I don't think it's any less (or any more) offensive that a black guy dressing up as a white stereotype. I'm not flamebaiting. I just wanted an answer. A "discussion," if you will. Peace.

18. The correct term is MINSTREL...
Edited on Mon Nov-10-03 11:58 PM by Isome
Once again, which part of the stereotype was negative, and an indictment of all caucasians?

Here's an example of negative stereotyping: Being a "gangsta" isn't an aspiration of the overwhelming majority of African American youth, nor is it what the overwhelming majority are. It is, however, one of the most visible depictions of our youth in the media, despite reality.

13. Yes whatever.... There is a difference
The ass was also dressed in a prison jumpsuit and wearing shackles. Doesn't this tell you this is more than a harmless prank? The judge should be stripped of his robe and required to do community service with blacks who donate their time to doing good for the community. Maybe he could learn something of value.

10. Freepers were hilarious on this one
Saw posts identifying this guy as a Dem; turned out, it was a judge with the same name born in 1890 and dead for over 30 years. Somebody semi-sane on FR corrected it. Amazing that, in 2003, a JUDGE (and I am a lawyer) could be so outrageous. Welcome to George W. Bush's America, my friends.

15. Perhaps this 'judge' should be required to show up...
in his courtroom made up like that.

Or be sent into a predominantly black town dressed like that.

As for the black guy that dressed as a white guy, he doesn't seem to be running with a full tank either.

Just my opinion, and I'm stickin' to it.
