Did anyone else feel moved by Gore's speech?
I could not believe my ears, was blown away by his honest presentation of the damage the Bush admin. is doing. He touched on so many different aspects of our current political climate. The erosion of civil liberties, the Plame outing, harrassment of immigrants, the surveilance mentality that he says is Orwellian, and something no one ever expected here in the U.S.
He managed to be both strong and humorous, making some jokes along the way. Like, he said "Ashcroft is on it," about the Plame outing. And he kept saying, do we think this is ok?
The audience was really cheering, and I was happy to watch that on c-span. cspan is one of the few places that still present a balance of views.
Gore seemed genuinely concerned, and it is a bit frightening to see our senators and leaders say outright that we are heading towards a police state. Did anybody else watch Gore, and if so, what did you think about his speech?

And I was damn near moved to tears. Do you think he might get in the race after all? Sounded like a particularly good campaign speech. I don't really think he will, but you never know.

2. Yes Gore did a great job
I think it was one of the best speeches Gore has ever given...it was thorough and chock full of facts...quite powerful...and he spoke eloquently and sounded quite presidential.

3. I am always moved to see his dignified, intelligent, statesmanlike
presentation and thoughts....esp. when I am rudely reminded of the utter cretin who sits in Gore's rightful place.

You have to wonder about the direction the country when Bush still retains as much popularity as it does....and Gore is still demeaned.

6. I'm moved by the fact that if Gore had been as relaxed and
on point as he has been at his last two speeches, DU probably wouldn't exist. He would have crushed Chimp by a margin as to make Florida moot. It also makes me realize that he probably would have been a better President than I thought he would have been.

7. Yes, I thought the speech was magnificent. There has been nothing like
it, from ANY political figure, since Bush took office.

My take is that Gore has developed a great deal, in his 3 years of observing things from the sidelines.

Most of the Dem candidates appear like puny lightweights, when measured against the standard set by this speech. Granted, Gore had a whole hour here all to himself. Still, IMO, no other Democrat has offered an analysis of our present situation that remotely compares with the powerful truth & quality of this address.

The fact that there's been so little of discussion of this today on DU is frankly disgusting. Everyone here wants to play the usual trivial "candidate thread*" game, or gear up for some nice Nader bashing.

*Here is a "candidate thread:"
- Poster #1: My candidate is our savior, & yours is an asshole.
- Poster #2: No! MY candidate is our savior, & YOURS is an asshole.
- Poster #3: Ummm... You're so UNINFORMED! MY guy is great, and....

what a fucked up world we inhabit that he is not our president.

I just wonder if his speech was the more potent because he isn't running for office at this time. He doesn't have to say the right things to the right people.

18. Not To Be Contrary
I liked the speach very much and I plan to listen to it a few more times before I'm done too. However, I thought the speach he gave back in August (I think it was August 7, not sure) that Move On sponsored was much better. That's just my opnion of course, and it really doesn't matter which was the better of the two, or that the next might be the best. There is something much greater here. Much greater indeed.

Let me ask you this, at this very moment which party has the greatest number of its senior statesmen still in the public view and shaping the public perspective? The Republicans have Reagan, Dole, Bush I, and Gerald Ford. None of whom (well, maybe Dole and Bush) are getting out in public any more. By contrast the Democratic Party has President Clinton, President Carter, Vice President Gore, and each of the 9 candidates as well. When it comes to fire power in credentials just take a look at the 9. So think about it, how on earth can the Republican's sustain any sort of lead when we have all the big guns? It can't be done. This is not Forrest Gump, ignorance does not prevail.

25. I agree that the August speech was GREAT!
But I saw this as a wonderful continuation of that theme. False impressions in August and what they have done with the results of conveying those false impressions in this speech.

A wonderful theme. Exposing the fascists.

19. It was an outstanding speach
I really hope he continues to speak publicly about this issue. It's not being addressed nearly enough, especially considering that even average joe Americans are scared of Ashcroft. (see, people aren't totally clueless!)

He was right on target with everything he said .Of course then I had to hear the Gore haters calling in on C-Span ,you know the busies that even when given facts ,will still defend the idiot in office ! I have heard from other politicians ,that this white house is the most secret ,dont believe anyone has the right to ? the loss of our rights ! Some called in and said what Gore was saying about the patriot act was a lie .How do they know ,are the prevy to information that the bushies wont even share with a investigating committee ?

29. I felt as though I was watching our president in exile.
What the media did to Gore is a tragedy. A real tragedy. People are scared he might lose again, when he never lost in the first place.

I don't understand how he would get less votes than the first time around. Do you? Yet so many people write him off immediately because the media has painted him as unwinnable. I don't get it.

He made me feel like there was somebody on his level that really understood the hard core issues, like, er, democracy, and accountablility. His words on secret government realy brought that home.

Alas, what a national tragedy.

30. Totally. The Concentration Was INTENSE.
He was totally in command of every syllable, even when he appeared to be ice-breaking. About 3/4 of the way through, when some of the audience broke in, where he raised his hand to quell them, there was a break in the TOTAL concentration, and a shaft of his mindpower was almost palpable. Talk about "master and commander."

32. (not to be contrary)
Yeah, I agree that his august speech was awesome. It's just that he did not go into the depth (imo) regarding the big brother theme. Also, much more has happened since then, so there's more to talk about, of course. And, as he said that this is just the beginning (of the repressive trend), I'm sure his next speech will address even more. I guess that each time I hear him speak, i realize how deeply he cares about what is happening to our country. And I appreciate his knowledge and references to remarks made by founding fathers, and how that applies to the "now". We are living through a difficult period in history. I'm glad he is out there speaking about our times. It is hard not to wish, and think about what if he was our president. On the other hand, at least we still have a modicum of free speech, so that he can be heard.
