How tough for Bremer and troops to stay in Baghdad ?
They thought they were in a "green zone" - safe from attack. However, in the last couple of weeks, even today, rockets and mortars have rained down on their security. Do they stay or do they move? And if they do move, where to? The old Saddam mansion is rather comfortable and they would not like to move out into tents with sand blowing in their cracks.

Surely this is something they have thought about or are discussing. They are not safe when mortars and rockets can be walked into their compound at anytime. That is not a wise military decision to leave in that situation. Either they must secure the area or they need to move?

1. I read this morning
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 04:43 PM by sparosnare
that Bremer is on his way to Washington; left abruptly; cancelled meeting with Polish leader.
I think there are 2 reasons - he's either getting fired, or we're gonna bomb the crap out of the area. We did threaten force if the incursions don't stop.

I'll try to find link....

4. So, they're gonna take Lott's advice and bomb Baghdad?
Sad and sick.

Reminds me of Tricky Dick deciding to bomb the crap out of North Vietnam ("bomb them back to the stone age" was the quote)

That worked like a charm.

5. I think he wants OUT
versus getting fired - this based on his demeanor during last weekend's sabbath gasbag shows.

2. Link to story
Bremer leaves Baghdad
From correspondents in Baghdad
November 12, 2003

ADMINISTRATOR Paul Bremer left today for Washington, coalition officials said, without offering any explanation for the previously unannounced trip.

Bremer had been expected to meet with visiting Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller but cancelled the meeting.

The trip comes as Iraqi insurgents step up attacks against US soldiers and amid continued problems in finding a formula for choosing delegates to a convention to draft a new constitution.

Following three strong detonations heard in Baghdad shortly after Bremer's departure, smoke was seen rising from the US-controlled "green zone".

3. You are right
Mortars and rockets ignore walls and checkpoints.

These guys are sitting ducks.
