I'm going to hold an ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) meeting at my high school. I'm going to show a movie that has civil liberties theme in it. But right now I can't think of a movie that does? Any ideas for a movie? The movie should be interesting that would perk the interest of high school students. Also it should be controversial. I would like it to be a movie not a documentary because this particular day will also be a members drive. So we want to recruit as many as we can.
I was thinking about showing "The American President" but another club did that so...that is out of the option.

11. Tom Hanks won an oscar.. |
|
...for his performance as an AIDS-stricken attorney. Denzel plays his doc, who has to come to grips with his own fear about AIDS> And that's Antonio Banderas as Hanks' lover. fine film, but ultimately depressing. might want to look for something more upbeat!

I love the George Orwell quote Flynt uses in court.. It's all about the 1st Amendment.

A good film about the Joseph McCarthy Era, with Peter Boyle as the reckless senator from Wisconsin and Burgess Meredith as the attorney who finally nails McCarthy with the line: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you no sense of decency?" It's a good one. Highly recommended, and Boyle (now Raymond's dad on TV) gives a fabulous performance. It's eerie.

GREAT movie...."Paradise Road". A very sad, shameful look at the internment camps.
"Good Morning, Vietnam" with Robin Williams.
"Philedelphia", Tom Hanks.

Well ... those Illinois Nazis did have the ACLU's support. They should see that the ACLU isn't left or right, conservative or progressive. It's about protecting freedom.
Maybe as the second showing in a double feature.

The Blacklist.....There is a movie AND a documentary. The documentary was done by "Biography" AMC, I thibk. The movie should be available in video stores.
That movie would really hit home with current events. IMCPO
