My Veterans Day story: My Mother-in-law is now anti-Bush. |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 07:15 PM by Ilsa
I took my kids to see their grandparents today. My MIL, God Bless her, is a very patriotic woman. She raised three children while her husband took three tours in Special Forces to Vietnam (and vicinity) and then retired after twenty. She worked for 20+ years for the same growing grocery store chain, with a strong ethic and loyalty. They never complained about lousy pay, or the time she was informed erroneously that her husband had been killed in Vietnam. She has a heart of gold when it comes to the suffering of small animals and children. She is fiercely loyal to family. They have flown the Flag outside their country home ever since I've known them.
She has always been only mildly political, and usually a moderate, mostly independent. But she is so disturbed by the war in Iraq, the killing of innocent civilians and children, the killing of our soldiers for the BFEE, the expenditure of billions on an illegal occupation, the starving of our own economy, that today of all days, she has refused to fly her Flag. She told me she is ashamed of the US's behavior toward the rest of the world and the arrogance of our CIC. She said she'll keep her flag folded and under her bed until the Loon and the Goon are long gone.
And that is my Veterans Day story.

And a very good story too. Always makes me glad to see other people who feel the same as I.

She was very supportive of Shrub after 9/11. She was so traumatized by 9/11 that her husband made her stop watching tv for a week to break the spell. She isn't a highly educated woman, but she is smart and can see through bullshit like clear glass. She has the media figured out and is sick of their cheerleading for Smirk and Sneer. She won't even watch the news anymore because she feels it is so slanted toward the BFEE.
My husband's family grew up on and around Fort Bragg. My husband's little brother thought the pledge went like this: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Stake of Fort Bragg..."

Always heartening to hear about someone coming out of the dark, and seeing this corrupt administration for what it is. As usual, for others, I counsel the slow and steady approach. Keep pointing out the disturbing aspects of this administration, such as the ever-shifting rationales for invading Iraq. Most people are smart enough to figure it out for themselves. You don't have to make them starred members of DU; all we want is their vote in November 2004.
