Edwards goes up with new ad in Iowa, New Hampshire

LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer Monday, November 10, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(11-10) 13:43 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards rolled out a new commercial in Iowa and New Hampshire on Monday, continuing his onslaught of TV advertising in hopes of sparking his campaign.

The 30-second spot highlights his "Real Solutions for America," including his proposals for health care, jobs and education.

"You deserve to know what my ideas are, what my vision for the country is, and how it is I plan to get there," Edwards tells citizens gathered in a town hall on the campaign trail.

1. I like Edwards for VP
He should have run for another Senate term and built a base but he's the one guy who has a sunny disposition. I know some here think that we can win by being angry white voters but I think we need to reach out to a broader base.

2. For Horseracing Fans...
...This TV campaign is probably the last for Edwards, or darn near it. He's starting to get dangerously close to state caps, at least if he chooses to stay within the federal matching funds system.

Edwards has run a lot of ads, and so far he's treading water. Not necessarily a bad thing, though, in Iowa, since Clark and Lieberman gave him an opening to contest 3rd place with Kerry.

Personally I'd prefer that Edwards win South Carolina if Dean cannot. We shall see.

3. "near state caps"? Do you have a citation of for that?
That's the first time I've heard that.

4. This article says...
...The campaign called the ad buy -- in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Manchester, N.H. -- substantial, but would not provide details. Spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said the ad will run in both states "for a while."

Edwards has bought airtime in media markets in both states since the summer, but has steered from the most expensive markets, such as Boston, which reaches viewers in southern New Hampshire.

The North Carolina senator has spent more than $1.5 million in both Iowa and New Hampshire combined

What are the caps?

We could do worse than Edwards. Photogenic, well spoken and a Southerner from the working class.

6. Key: he fights for the working class and that's who Bush is assaulting.
Edwards is the man for the moment.
