Should flag burning amendment apply to ALL flags?
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 01:49 AM by Cronus
I'm not for banning flag desecration at all. But for those who advocate it, would you ban the desecration of the flags of every state in the union, every country and every state in the world?

That would show respect for all these cultural symbols.

And if not, why not do that? Why only the stars and stripes? Surely if we want our citizens, immigrants and other countries to show respect to our flag, we should give the same respect back to them, right?

Or am I missing something as to why the US flag is special?

2. That begs the question...

Would Clark support a ban on burning the confederate flag?

3. This would be a US amendment
Why would the US Congress pass an amendment banning the burning of the Angolan flag??

5. I can list why
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 01:57 AM by Cronus
Of course, so could you:

1/ It would show respect for that country
2/ It would encourage other countries to respect OUR flag
3/ It's the right thing to do if you're going to do it at all

Why would the US Congress pass an amendment banning the burning of the stars and stripes, but let people burn the Canadian or British flag?

Why is it OK to let people burn the flags of our allies; allies who's children died in the same wars as ours, but not ours?

Why do some people value the flags of other countries less than their own?

6. Because they don't represent me
The only flag above the US Flag is the UN Flag.

10. So we could still burn a California flag, for example
...because you're in another state.

And it's OK to desecrate a Canadian flag because even although the Canadians stood side by side with the US in World War II and other latter day skirmishes, they don't represent you?

And you can shit on the British flag, even although they're the only ones to hang with the US through thick and thin for a couple of hundred years, again because they don't represent you?

I think your alleged respect for what a flag symbolizes is simply a very thin veneer of false patriotism rather than that which should be affored a nation or state's most notable cultural symbol.

And it is this that tells me that your support of a desecration amendment it based not on respect for the flag, but on disresepect for people who have something to tell us about our country.

7.  a flag is just a piece of cloth
and like many things gains value by the value given to it by humans. Our flag the flag of the United States represents us, the problem occurs in that we are "not" what we pretend to be. Another problem lies in how we go on and on about how "free" we are and yet we want to place a limit on this freedom by protecting a piece of cloth "we" have given value to.. If it no longer holds "value" for some of us......then so be it. Freedom is more valuable than a piece of cloth representing an idea that doesn't exist.

8. I keep a Stars and Bars in my auto trunk
for the appropriate flag burning protest. Will it be illegal to burn it? The Nazi flag?
