5. Solid Betty Castor
She was head of Univ. of South Florida in Tampa for many years and a education "star".....

Education is one topic you can pull from both sides especially female voters.....

2002 McBride lost by 14% (IMHO 13+ of that was BBV magic) BUT small class sizes won by 4%

8. solidly behind Castor
she's won statewide twice already, and when she won her second race, she carried all 67 counties! and, she is from Tampa, which tends to split its votes normally but would likely be solid for Castor if she were the candidate...Deutsch, my Congressman, is very confrontational in style, and I do NOT think Penelas is a good mayor at all

9. solid Betty Castor
I don't think Hastings will run, plus, he can't win given his past ethical issues (legitimate or not)

Deutsch would be my second choice. He's uninspiring and too much of a war monger for my tastes, though. The way he's gone after Penelas has also been a bit distasteful, although Penelas deserves every bit of it.

Penelas is a sorry excuse for a Democrat. I can't forgive him supporting and holding fundraisers for Mario Diaz-Balart over Annie Bettancourt for Congress in 2002.

14. Here are some links
Betancourt is also Cuban, so he doesn't even have that excuse. She did come out against the boycott, which would have made it risky for Penelas to support her, but he should have done so anyway, or at least remained neutral.

And that doesn't even include what he did to Gore!

I haven't investigated the race completely, but from what I've heard I lean Castor.

Corrine Brown's endorsement of Deutch on Monday did give me some second thoughts, though.

11. Katherine Harris, I'm serious
None of these Dems have a snowballs chance in hell, lets be honest.

Of the repugs, harris is the lessor of the most vile, evil, good-ol' white boys.
1 Johnny Byrd-this guy put the slime in slimey. The word around Tallahassee with this guy is they miss 'the good old days of Tom Feeney' thats saying alot.
2. Dan Webster-this decript old holy roller is a Bible thumping asshole. He's the guy who told a bunch of high schoolers they were going to rot in hell because they were gay.
3. Bill McCollum-old horse face himself. shit he'll try and re-impeach Bill Clinton.

Faced with those options, I'll go with Katherine Harris. Maybe the woman has a flicker of a warm heart after all. Maybe she'll get torqued off after the first GOPer says 'now just you dont fret your pretty little head over this stuff, sweetie'

17. Your post doesn't make any sense
It isn't like the California governor's race where everyone will run at the same time.

One republican will win the republican primary, one Democrat will win the Democratic primary and then they'll face each other in the general election.

19. I understand how it works, pal
Thanks for the civics lesson though! My point is ANY repug is going to win against ANY of these no-name Dems, whomever they may be. Janet Reno could not even win the Dem nomination for Gov. here last election. McBride got slammed.

As unappealling as it may seem, it might as well be K Harris, she is the lessor of evils from that bunch. The devil you know, etc. I think there is the remotest chance she could be rehabilitated.

23. and it still doesn't make any sense
I understand why you would prefer that Katherine Harris win the republican nomination. But after that, it doesn't make any difference how slimely Webster and McCullum are -- they're out of the picture and the choice would be between Harris (who you think might be rehabilitated) and a Democrat (who you think would lose).

But even if Harris could be rehabilitated (which is unlikely) and the Democrat would lose (Castor, who has been elected statewide twice, would actually have a very good chance against Harris), it doesn't make any sense to root for her.

21. question on Webster.
If memory serves (and it rarely does anymore), it was a FL rep. named Trovillion that told the gay students they were going to go to hell for their sins.

I do remember writing a furious e-mail at the time.

Not finding anything on this Webster guy doing the same.

Help me out? thanks.

18. Can a Miami-Cuban candidate appeal to rest of state?
I don't really know the candidates yet. I guess that is my question about Penelas.
I guess I'm leaning Betty Castor at this point - former USF president?

22. Solid Betty Castor!
Castor has broad support, a solid reputation, and name recognition. She truly is one of Florida's greatest female politicans, and was one of the University of South Florida's best presidents. The positive change that she ushered in at USF is remarkable. Her daughter Kathy, a Hillsborough County Commissioner (Tampa), is a rising star. Don't forget, Wesley Clark is going to have big coat tails, especially in a 50/50 swing state like Florida. The independents and moderate repugs are going to love him. For years people are going to be talking about the "Clark Republicans".
