1. Will be nearly impossible
unless you know the name of the board member.

I've heard this before too. I don't know the name of the doner though... That would be all you needed to find out how much.

www.opensecrets.org

"A member of the Halliburton board" won't necessarily be searchable, though, since a lot of times, board members are executives at other companies. (For instance, a few years ago, a member of the board where I work was the president of the company where my husband works.) It would help to know the name.

Also, if he/she donated less than $200, it wouldn't be listed.

On Edit:
I searched for "Halliburton" as a donor employer in the 2004 election cycle. I came up with three donors to Republican committees, two to Halliburton's PAC, two separate donations of $500 to Wesley Clark by a "production software con" (in other words, probably not an executive), and one donation to GWB.

So -- either Dean's Halliburton contributor works for another company and just sits on Halliburton's board, gave too little to be itemized, or maybe works for a differently named division. (Or I messed up in searching.)

12. You can search by donor
http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/index.asp

There's an "occupation/employer" field.

9. interesting fundraising stuff about Bush...
MERRILL LYNCH TOP CONTRIBUTOR TO BUSH AFTER THIRD QUARTER

Clark Raises More From Lawyers Than From Any Other Industry; Dean Relies Heavily on Professors

---------------------------------------------------------------

Updated 10/17/03 -- Merrill Lynch, the financial services giant, tops the list of contributors to President Bush's re-election campaign through September of this year, with $364,000 in donations from employees and their immediate family members, according to a preliminary study of third-quarter campaign finance filings by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

Merrill Lynch, whose CEO, Stan O'Neal, is listed by the Bush campaign as a "Ranger" who has raised at least $200,000, also topped the list of Bush contributors after the second quarter of this year. The company's total as of June 30 was more than $282,000, which already exceeded that of Bush's top contributor for the entire 2000 election cycle. Credit card giant MBNA led all organizations with $240,675 in individual and PAC contributions for Bush's first presidential bid.

UBS Americas, the securities holding company, is second among Bush's top contributors with $261,000 in individual and PAC contributions through Sept. 30. PricewaterhouseCoopers, the world's largest accounting firm, is third among Bush's top givers with $210,000 in contributions. Credit Suisse First Boston ranks fourth with $203,000. (Co-CEO John Mack is a Bush "Pioneer" who has raised more than $100,000 for the campaign.) Fifth is Goldman Sachs, with $197,000 in contributions.

Bush has raised more from lawyers and law firms ($5.4 million) than from any other industry so far this year. The real estate industry is his next most generous giver, with $4.9 million in individual and PAC contributions. Securities and investment firms follow with $3.8 million. Also among his top 20 industries are doctors and other health professionals ($2.0 million), insurance companies ($1.4 million) and the oil and gas industry ($953,000).

Bush has raised a total of more than $84 million for next year's election, and had more than $70 million in the bank as of Sept. 30. He has collected more money in his home state of Texas ($9.6 million) than from anywhere else. California ($8.3 million) is his second most generous state, followed by Florida ($7.3 million) and New York ($4.6 million).

The ZIP code where Bush has raised the most money is 10021 in New York City ($712,500), which was the biggest source of money overall outside Washington, D.C. in the 2002 and 2000 election cycles. His next highest ZIP code is 45243 in Cincinnati ($542,000). The Cincinnati area is home to a handful of loyal Bush donors: Mercer Reynolds, Bush's chief fundraiser; William DeWitt Jr., a Bush "Ranger" who, with Reynolds, helped Bush get started in the oil business; John Kern, a business partner of Reynolds and DeWitt who is a Bush "Ranger"; and Carl Lindner, a Bush "Ranger" and chairman of American Financial Group.

11. Dear god, I'm bored at work.
I looked up Halliburton's board of directors. Full list here:
http://www.halliburton.com/about/board_of_dir.jsp

Robert Crandall, $2,000 to Dean (over three donations). His background is actually American Airlines. He's retired. No other donations in 2004, although he did donate to George W. and Bob Kerrey (D-NE) in 1999, and John Mica (R-FL) in 2002.

Ray Hunt gave to George W.
J Landis Martin and Jay Precourt, gave to a bunch of Republicans.

No other directors showed up in a 2004 name-by-name search. No other Democrats did, either.

So, the pubbie was correct, but whether it means anything beyond "he liked W. last time, he likes Dean now" is still uncertain.

13. The Crandall
on Haliburton's board is Robert L. Crandall. The Crandall who donated to Dean for America is Robert Crandall -- unemployed/retired.

I think we'd need some further confirmation before assuming that these are one in the same.

15. I believe they are the same, but I could be mistaken
Robert L. Crandall of Halliburton is chairman emeritus of AMR, which makes him retired. (A board position generally isn't considered employment for disclosure purposes.)

Here is his open secrets chart for the last three years:

CRANDALL, ROBERT

NOT EMPLOYED/RETIRED
3/23/2003

Dean, Howard

So, the 1999 donor to George W. is absolutely the same guy. If all of these are from the same guy, he appears to have retired between his contributions to George and Kerrey, and then mobed sometime between 1999 and 2002 (see the Zip codes).

I do believe these to be the same, based on (educated) conjecture, but I could be wrong. (There's only one Robert Crandall listed in Dallas, at a different Zip code entirely.)

Disclosure: I am a Dean supporter.

I think you are probably right. The 20 zipcode appears to be for AMR. The other is probably his home. Besides, if these guys say it's true, it must be so: http://www.deanforamericans.com
