Republicans come unglued: Soros the cause
The Republican shills are out and about screaming about how George Soros' pledge to moveon.org flies in the face of campaign finance reform. Really... What about that 200 million dollar war chest Bush has stockpiled to run an uncontested campaign. The double standards continue to amaze me. If I had a gazillion bucks, rest asure I would spend it to defeat Bush Inc.

C'mon NY LOTTO!!!!

1. Campaign finance reform??
Moveon.org is not a political campaign supporting a candidate. The republicans need to take it like a man and get over it. Crybabies!!

19. You might want to check up on Mr Soros's "conscience"
Before everyone gets all slap-happy about Soros and MoveOn, you might want to learn more about his connections to Carlyle, BCCI, and the Russian oligarchs:

31. Mr. Soros has firsthand experience with totalitarianism.
He seems to see parallels between the anti-democratic direction of the US under Bush and the neocons and past totalitarian regimes. He seems to be determined, at considerable personal expense, to end the threat of totalitarianism in the US before it becomes unstoppable.

I see these parallels also. I am glad to have an ally like Mr. Soros. We have a similar goal:

Getting Bush and the neocons out of power at any cost before they can fully consolidate a domestically unchallengeable fascist dictatorship in America. If Bush gets reselected in 2004, democracy in the US is finished.

36. Did you read ANY of the material
DUers have been researching George Soros pretty thoroughly. Have you bothered to look at what this man represents before you jump on the Soros Gravy Train? Or is it sufficient that he is rich, what he represents doesn't matter, and that replacing Bush with another Carlyle spook somehow helps?

Can you elaborate on some of these parallels you seem to see here?

41. I am not jumping on any gravy train.
The following excerpt by Subcomandante Marcos is something I believe is true, and I am posting it so that you will understand that I am not an uninformed idiot:

The global power of the financial centers is so great, that they can afford not to worry about the political tendency of those who hold power in a nation, if the economic program (in other words, the role that nation has in the global economic megaprogram) remains unaltered. The financial disciplines impose themselves upon the different colors of the world political spectrum in regards to the government of any nation. he great world power can tolerate a leftist government in any part of the world, as long as the government does not take measures that go against the needs of the world financial centers. But in no way will it tolerate that an alternative economic, political and social organization consolidate. For the megapolitics, the national politics are dwarfed and submit to the dictates of the financial centers. It will be this way until the dwarfs rebel . .

http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/mexico/ezln/1997/jigsaw.html

It is very clear to me that Bush and the neocons have a long term fascist agenda which will destroy Democracy in the US. I am not aware of any special favors that Mr. Soros is asking in return for his donations to Democrats. If he asked for special favors, I would say that the money should not be accepted. It appears that he recognizes that Bush and the neocons are an imminent threat to democracy and the world. If I was as wealthy as George Soros, I would donate large sums to the Democrats as well. (Yes, I read the material; none of it surprises me.)

What, specifically, is your beef with taking George Soros's cash?

I see Bush and the neocons at this time to be as much of a threat to our nation and the world as Hitler and the Nazis were to Germany and the world in 1931. I believe it is imperative that they are stopped ASAP. I am willing to sacrifice some long term ideals in order to stop them. In studying the rise of fascism in Nazi Germany, I saw one key element that allowed the Nazis to assume control of Germany: The lack of unified opposition among the other parties which opposed Hitler and allowed the Nazis to gain the largest number of seats in the Reichstag, which ultimately gave Hitler enough leverage to ultimately assume complete control. I believe we must all unite to get rid of Bush and the neocons. They are a clear and present danger. We must not make the same mistake that the German people made in the early 30's.

Since I don't have time to write a novel, here are some brief parallels between the Bush regime and a former totalitarian dictatorship:

1)Bush being appointed to his position without having been elected by popular mandate.

2)Using a domestic "terrorist" incident (9/11) to inspire fear and foster nationalism and public support for policies.

3)Using a domestic "terrorist" incident (9/11) to impose suspension of civil liberties (Patriot Act).

4)Control of media and use of widespread media propaganda to obtain and retain public support of policies.

5)Lying to the public in order to provide justification for and popular support for a preemptive attack on a sovereign nation that was not an imminent threat.

I believe that replacing Bush with any Democrat, even the obvious corporate shills, will help, at least temporarily. I would totally prefer that Kucinich gets elected , he seems to be very aware of transnational corporate influence on our government, and is the only candidate that seems willing to address this problem if he is elected. But the bottom line is, Bush and the neocons have to go. If you don't already recognize that they have a fascist agenda, there is no sense in debating this.

I fully recognize that corporate influence is destroying the Democratic Party. I detest the DLC. However, the Democratic Party is the only realistic means of ousting Bush and the neocons at this time. Electing a Democrat to the Presidency (and gaining a Democratic majority in the House and/or Senate) will prevent, or at least slow down, the progression of fascism in the US. If Bush and the neocons are allowed to continue for four more years, they will assume an authoritarian control that will be unchallengeable through peaceful democratic means. In other words, the game is over, and we lost. Permanente.

Look, I'm already gone. I left the US right after Bush was selected, and don't plan to return unless drastic changes occur in the US government, and the corporate influence in government is neutralized. At least if Democrats regain some control of the government, it will buy enough time for people to try and fix it, or at least make financial preparations to split before the next RW cabal comes to power.

Can you give me a realistic alternative to electing a Democrat in stopping the Bush regime? I have not found one, and would appreciate it if you would let me know if you know of one. If Mr. Soros is going to help us get rid of Bush and the neocons, whatever his motivations, I say welcome aboard.

45. My response offended you, and for that I apologize
I agree with all of the points you enumerated.

I don't think you are an idiot. In fact, you just proved to me that you are far from it.

You don't have to convince me that the Bush regime is fascist and totalitarian in nature. I'm well aware of that.

There are a lot of people here who are celebrating the dirty money that George Soros is providing. I am merely trying to point out that it will come with a big price tag. That is all.

And, I truly believe that the only alternative to stop this rush to fascism is to elect a Democrat. After all, I am one myself, and have been one all my life..

Soros has money to spend; right now, he has chosen to spend it this way. He is Hungarian, and had to live in a totalitarian regime for much of his life.

Bush and the neocons have to go, I agree.

Thanks for a great post, and if you have read what I have said here for the past three years, I think you will find we are mostly in agreement.

Peace,
Steve

28. problem here
which might be remedied somehow (say IRS audits?) but lots of corporations apparently have lots of pressure to donate to a specific campaign, sometimes going so far as to give bonuses to that effect.

i think public financing is the only viable solution. maybe something like the candidate of any party which receives 10% of the previous election's vote is entitled to receive federal funding, which in addition with funds raised by the candidate, can total up to $XXX million or the amount raised by the highest-raising candidate in the election.

conservatives might complain how this usurps the "market preference". however, last time i checked, democracy meant one person, one vote, not one dollar, one vote.

23. Question
Have they been in an uproar as to the reason Soros gave for donating his money?

That to me is what they are going to ignore they know there's truth in his reasoning and they are Afraid to discuss that part of it!!

Mr Soros says a “supremacist ideology” guides the White House. He hears echoes in its rhetoric of his childhood in occupied Hungary: “When I hear Bush say, ‘You’re either with us or against us,’ it reminds me of the Germans.” It conjures up memories, he said, of Nazi slogans on the walls, Der Feind Hort mit (The enemy is listening): “My experiences under Nazi and Soviet rule have sensitised me,” he said.

25. Why don't we stop pointing the finger and call them on their shit?
The "You do it too" game sure is fun, but it doesn't get us any closer to real reform.

If the Repubs bring up Soros, don't just call them hypocrites. Demand that they back their whining up with a plan for real reform. Embrace their noble goal of campaign finance reform and force them to work for the change they claim they want.

Not that I don't love the fact that there's a liberal out there with money for a great organization like MoveOn, but isn't our real goal to get rid of soft money in elections. MoveOn isn't a campaign fund, but if the Repubs want to attack it as one we can sure as hell use that as leverage to attack their soft money slush funds.

From the RNC website:

Additionally, the RNC announced that Christine Iverson has been named the RNC's Press Secretary for the 2004 campaign cycle. A former television news reporter, Iverson served as Communications Director for John Thune's 2002 Senate campaign. Previously, she was Communications Director for the House Republican Conference under Conference Chairman J.C. Watts and has most recently served as Communications Director of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

I'm betting that they're calling Democrats hypocrites because we believe in Campaign Finance Reform, but since they've done so much to help destroy any effective form of it (with idiotic reasoning like "Money is exactly like Free Speech") Democrats have no choice but to fight them using the same rules.

It's like an assailant screaming "hypocrite" at a non-violence advocate for defending her/himself (assuming that said advocate is not a absolute pacifist).
