Has anyone thought about a post-Bush DU? |
|
Right now we're concentrated on removing Bush and his cabal from Washington, which is a worthy and noble undertaking. But has anyone goven any thought to DU after Bush is tossed out? (positive thinking!)
What will the DU World be like? I've got my own thoughts, just wondering if anybody else has any or has thought about it.

2. when we dump the neocon Bush GOPNAC Cabal, |
|
they will go after the Democratic President just like they did Clinton. We will have two missions:
1. Make sure the Democratic President stays true to Democratic principles.
2. Counter the neocon disinformation attack machine with the truth.

3. We can still bitch about Congress. |
|
I don't think we're going to take back the House. And I really don't want to be pessimistic, but I'm not sure about the Senate, either.
So, there could be problems when President Dean (ok, for instance. substitute your candidate) tries to move his agenda through an obstructionist Congress.

18. That's what I was thinking. |
|
It'll be all lounge...all day. With threads like: "I just fed my dog...ask me anything."
President Dean will do such a great job...we'll all become bored with politics. Ah...the boredom of peace and prosperity.

Restoring the Fairness Doctrine Restoring Environmental regulations Repealing the Bush Reverse-Robin-Hood Tax Thefts Amending the Constitution to fix the Supreme Court problem (18 year terms -- one justice replaced every 2 years)
So much more to do.
I hope not to see DU fade away if the Busheviks are hurled back...

Drug Policy, which is the new Jim Crow, on which democrats have been as draconian as Republicans. We could talk about who is going to be the Democratic governor of New-Iraq. We could talk about how to go about fighting the war against Al Qaeda, not just militarily but economically, once we are no longer lead by an oil-cabal. We can talk about domestic issues, comprehensive health care for every child. We could talk about changing the way we fund education, by having a democrat create a federal system of funding schools.

11. I'm amazed this even needs to be asked... |

Do we honestly not know what we're for, but only what we're against?
There is so much work to be done in (re)building this nation that it will keep us busy through both terms.
Fighting for the following things to occur:
1. US out of iraq. 2. Civil liberties restoration 3. Curtail the out of control police powers 4. Open up goverment to public scrutiny again 5. Restore veterans benefits 6. Push through tax cut repeals 7. Reform the pendagon and cut the budget 8. Repeal so-called "partial birth abortion" ban 9. Repair inernationa relations, end unilateralism 10. sign the Kyoto treaty 11. Join the international criminal court 12. Push through domestic environmental reform and take back the EPA. 13. Focus great attention on the floundering public educational system 14. HEALTH CARE REFORM 15. pushing through gay-rights legislation, taking a stand on the anti-gay attitudes of the right.
These are just fifteen things I thought of off the TOP of my head, and every single one of them will require an amry of committed grass roots foot soldiers to fight local battles to win these victories, defeat right wing fanatics and push legislation through congress...
God folks, if all we know how to do is just be pissed off with no purpose, then we might as well throw in the towel now... I had hoped this question would be a no-brainer.

Not only the list of things to be done, but especially the question "Do we honestly not know what we're for, but only what we're against?" I have been saying this, though not as well, on several posts related to the Democratic presidential candidates.
We need to know what we stand for and then articulate it. And not just the usual "I favor cold beer and warm women". I want specifics on how the candidates would institute the changes they say they favor.

14. Regime Change in the WH is step one |
|
After that is accomplished, there is a long hard road ahead to create a culture change in America in which education about progressive ideas, the real history of American values, and a reorientation toward cooperation and peace worldwide can again become a part of the American ethos.
There is activism at all levels that must be fueled to reverse the PNAC infiltration of congress and the judiciary.
There is tremendous work to do on the BBV issue, which will not go away until it is completely regulated with public oversight.
There is outreach to traditionally disenfranchised demographics such as poor southern whites, Arabic/Afghani/Iraqi/African Amercans.
There is the effort minimize the destructive, regressive influence of fundamentalist ideology in politics and public culture.
I could go on and on, but my point is that Republican think-tanks have engineered a repressive, dunb-downed, cultural change toward civic religion and rabid capitalistic self-interest over the last two decades. That's allot of BS to reverse!
We must reunify the Democratic party.
IMO we probably have two decades worth of work to get our country back on track to a liberal democracy we can be proud of.

at least up until the new President is sworn in at which moment the bashing will begin: (s)he is a DINO, not far left enough, too far left, isn't the candidate of (insert poster's name here) choice, is no different than Bush, is no different than Nader, isn't Nader etc. etc. etc.

20. We won't be having as many flame wars |
|
since there's only one President and not a bnuch of candidates for supporters to rally around. Only problem is that we'll have people farther on the left bashing the President (which is only justified if they do something really DINOish). In 2008, FR will be bitterly divided with flame wars between supporters of their candidates and with Libertarians (Didn't FR have flame wars between * and McCain supporters in 2000)?

I still come here for news, first thing.
As for the political hardball played here, we will need to be wary of Republican (and some Dem) treachery that threatens our Constitutional system.
Also bear in mind that we will need to repair much of the damage done since 2000.
