Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 05:55 PM by eleny
I'm ot quite sure if this is the beginning of the fillibuster. So, if someone can help, I'd appreciate it. I was so excited - I forgot to put something in the body of my posting, originally. Thanks!

continued until 8 PM, when it could be completed.

would be elgible for the SCOTUS if they become appointed now. They'll have the most experience down the road. So, this is most important. After all, it's the SCOTUS that selected Bush* in the first place. This issue is not in the twilight zone. It's as basic as it can get.

That is a movie where there is a filibuster. The name is something like that, it might be a little different. There was a long speech by the senator in that movie. Those types of filibusters don't happen anymore.

There won't be senators speaking for a long time. It isn't really a filibuster. All it is is 30 hours of debate. There will be a lot of senators going back and forth. The democrats are technically filibustering because they are preventing a vote on the nomination.

Parenthood Supports Senate Efforts to Block Extremist Court Nominees

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) today expressed strong support for senators fighting the confirmation of extremist judges, including Carolyn Kuhl, Priscilla Owen, and Janice Rogers Brown, who have each built records in opposition to choice and women's reproductive rights. The Senate Republican leadership hopes to force votes on Friday, Nov. 14, on these three highly controversial nominees.

"Anti-choice hardliners believe now is the time for additional attacks on women's fundamental freedom of choice and they see the courts as their best tool to eradicate that freedom. We need judges who will protect reproductive rights in the face of many state legislatures, courts, and even the U.S. Congress, that are growing increasingly hostile to choice," said Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Gloria Feldt.

"Planned Parenthood will not sit on the sidelines while the administration tries to ram through extremist judicial nominees who are far out of the mainstream on core issues affecting women. We commend Senate efforts to block these unacceptable extremist nominees-and we hope that they will not be intimidated by anti-choice colleagues in Congress who seek to rollback freedom of choice," Feldt said.

Talking about how this is the first time in history that judges haven't come up for an up or down vote "once they come to the floor". Well, hrmph! The Repubs wouldn't even let some of Clinton's nominees to even get a hearing! They blocked hearings a number of times. The pot calling the kettle black. They don't deserve to be so righteous.

"First time a president is being treated in a ridiculous fashion..." HUH???? Where was Hatch during Clinton's terms of office? I guess he had his head up his butt.

77. Schumer on.
Dems have supported and nominated 168 judges Bush has sent them and only blocked 4. This debate will boomerang on the Republicans. All the American people have to do is look at that sign and say "Gee you are right." Repubs will not be satisfied until every single last one of Bush's nomination have been rubber-stamped.

Bottom line is simple. If they want agreement, then read the Constitution, tell the Prez to read the Constitution. The Senate does its own independent review. Their job is to ADVISE AND CONSENT.

States we should be debating the manufacturing/trade bill--a much higher priority than spending 30 hours debating the 4 judiciary nominees.

Who's trying to make the judiciary lapdogs to the legislature?
Who whines about the Supreme Court usurping power every time they make an unpopular decision?

It most certainly isn't the Dems trying to destroy the legislature.

99. Hatch is FULL OF SHIT ON CLINTON APPOINTMENTS
The Republican record on Hispanic nominees during the Clinton Administration was dismal. In fact, Senate Republicans blocked almost as many Hispanic nominees during the Clinton Administration as President Bush has nominated. The following Hispanic nominees never even received a hearing or a vote: Jorge Rangel and Enrique Moreno in the Fifth Circuit, Christine Arguello in the Tenth Circuit, and Richard Morado in the Southern Texas District Court. Anabelle Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and Sam Paz of California received hearings but no Committee vote. President Bush withdrew Enrique Moreno's re-nomination to the Fifth Circuit, despite Moreno's "well-qualified" rating by the ABA.

In 2000, the Republican-controlled Senate confirmed only 39 judges, including 8 circuit judges; in 1999, only 34 judges, including 7 circuit court judges; in 1997, only 36 judges, including 7 circuit court judges; and in 1996, only 17 judges, with no circuit court judges confirmed at all that year. More than a dozen, well-qualified Clinton nominees had to wait over 500 days to be confirmed, including nine who waited over 700 days, four who waited over 900 days, two who waited over 1,000 days, and one, Richard Paez, who waited 1,520 days from nomination to confirmation.

88. Democrats should talk about Jobs, Iraq, CIA Memo, Cheney's oil deals,
etc...and let the Repubs talk about the "judge" appointments. This would be a great opportunity to score some really great debate points about this entire Administration!
