Which DUers are too poor for a star?
I am feeling charitable. Please list a few DUers that are too poor to get their own star. I understand that the Bush* economy makes it tough to donate to a great place like DU. BTW, I know this should probably go in the lounge, but I want to hook up some GDers that I hang with all the time. So if you know someone, let me know. I will check back around 11:30.

2. mighty poor....
A few moths ago I scraped together enough to give $5 to my favorite candidate, but even that nearly broke the bank. I haven't even been able to afford my yearly donation to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and I have given to them for the last 5 years.

I can certainly write and support apps or administration for UNIX, AIX, Windows, OS/2, APL, VMS, MVS, AS400, C, C++, Java, all UNIX shells, SQL and DB2, BTRIEVE, CVS, PVCS, Visual (cough) Basic, etc from a remote location via T1, DSL, Cable or copper line.

If someone wants to make a donation to DU.com in my name be my guest.

I am as broke as broke can get, last month my oreilly-sucks.com site ran out
of bandwidth on the 17th of the month. So the website was offline for 14 days.

I am now using more bandwidth than I can afford. So if you also want to make a
donation to help me keep the oreilly site online I would appreciate it.

21. Alms For An Unemployed Teacher
I didn't get my contract renewed, so I've been working as a substitute until I find something more permanent. Meanwhile, I'm running up debt just to keep ahead of rent. Does that count?

If that's not enough, how's this for a pity story: I keep running into my ex-students all over the school system and they all ask me why I am not still teaching 4th grade.

:nopity:

But I'm thinking about changing professions anyway. Poverty blows. I can't even contribute to my candidate. I put down money one time to go with my wife to see him and Moby. On the other hand, I figure the amount of time I've put into the campaign, I've actually donated tens of thousands of dollars.;-)

127. I Was Led To Believe I Would Be Rehired At End Of Summer
Instead they brought teachers in from out of district. It wasn't so bad for me, since I was last in/first out and didn't have a full teaching certification (I was "alternate route"). There was another young teacher there, though, that was up for tenure. She had a class I don't wish on my worst enemies. Several of the students had real emotional problems and did not belong in general classes, but she soldiered on. My class was talkative, but generally a good bunch. She had some really nasty kids. Really sad - these were only 4th graders, but they had no structure to their lives and ended up with big-time behavior problems. Her class was like a warzone and they stabbed her in the back when it was over.

I guess I should mention that this was in a very poor neighborhood, and I had more than one student with a father in jail, several parents with drug problems, and another student whose father had actually been killed in a gunfight. It was kind of scary to see the kind of obstacles these very, very sweet kids faced as they grew up. A high school student was shot dead in a parking lot from gang-related issues, and I couldn't help but wonder how that really affected the kids. We talked about it, but it ended up raising more questions than it answered. Just like when we had a D.A.R.E program, and more than half of the kids in my class had personally seen drug paraphenalia on the local playgrounds. It was a very wonderful experience, but in a way it was also very harrowing.

A lot of people here really like it. I came here in the middle of a fundraising drive back in August. I thougt this place was great. I hung out for a couple days and got about 100 posts. I then dropped $20 so I could create polls and search. DU is great and that's why I am still here. It is tough, but great.

I was hoping maybe I'd have a few extra $$ by Friday - but things are getting shut off - so I don't see that happening. Times use to be a whole lot better for me and they will be again (hopefully). So give to those who most need it and deserve it. And thanks so much for your compassion and generosity in doing so.

Edited on Thu Nov-13-03 10:54 AM by oxymoron
but I must admit I felt the same way at first. My manufacturing related job is gone because of the greed and corruption of an evil regime. I've worked hard all of my life, and this was out of my control.

I was laid off from a great paying job and am in the process of changing fields...not an easy thing to do in this job market. Many people I know in my industry are also out of work. Fortunately, we have stayed close and have really developed a great support network.

It's heartening that DU'ers are sponsoring some of us that are feeling the impact. I appreciate the generosity of the incredibly cool people here at DU. That's what we Democrats are all about.

I pledge to sponser another DU'er when things improve.

I've been poor so long, that it's the only way I know how to live. I've learned how to prioritize however, so only though it's a small donation DU has become a must do on the list, it's right up there with the mortage and utulities.
This fund drive caught me off guard, and I can't contribute to seeing the smirk knocked off the smirking chimp*. This month anyway.
Next month though, if someone would be interested in matching me, I'd be very grateful.

I have sponsors for many of the others and will send them a PM later this afternoon. If anyone else decides to pick someone up from this list, please let me know so our efforts aren't duplicated and the maximum amount of people get stars.

75. As my dad used to say, I've been down so long it looks like
up to me.

You people are awesome and are literally bringing tears to my eyes. This is a warm and fuzzy thread and it makes me proud to be a DUer.

Meanwhile, I listen to the repuke next to me bitching about having to visit his dad in the nursing home tonight and the one behind me mad about child support.

This is a very kind thing for you all to do.

I will donate as soon as I get a decent paying job again and I feel that time will come. I've donated before and will do it again. DU is very important to me and the rest of the country even if they don't know it exists.

61. Alms for me!
I'm a grad student in Los Angeles, which automatically means I am poor. Then I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last year, so I have medical bills out the wazoo, even with my student health "benefits." I'm so far behind on my bills because of my illness that when I leave my apartment, I am fearful my gas will be turned off when I return.

Hate to kvetch, but it's for real.

It is so great to see DU'rs helping each other out in this way.

The important thing is to give to a good cause, and DU is, for the most part,:silly: a great bunch of folks, who may not always agree with other, but are for the most part also very cool with that.

unemployed for going on 4 months.
I get $89 a week for unemployment. I have been picking up contract jobs, a few days here, a couple weeks there.
Now the wind today...my shingles are all over the yard, I don't know how I will get the $$ for this.
Seems like one money disaster after another.
After getting hurt and spending 40K for school and then seeing the bottom fall out of the I.T. field...
I'll tell ya, things could be better.
So if someone would front me till things get better, I too will sponser someone later.

82. This was really great of you
thanks for your efforts. I'm not concerned about getting or keeping the star - my concern is that DU stays up and is profitable. It is one of the few sources I have that keeps me sane. Give to those who need the most - it is so kind and so generous an effort you've made. I sincerely hope my current situation will not last long and I will once again be able to contribute to the things that are most meaningful to me. In the meanwhile - Good Luck and I hope the goals are reached.

88. Mush alert....I am so proud to be a part of this online
community. Here there are people politely asking others if they would like to be sponsored and have someone donate to DU in their name. No judgment is being made on the people who need sponsorship. People see that many are hurting now, thanks to *, and those that are not are stepping up to the plate to help those who need it, no questions asked.

I cannot imagine a similar thing happening at that other site.

104. I just tried to pm you to show you how the message would appear
But it would not let me because you are too new a newbie, you need to get your post count up a bit. But if Prolesunited could pm you back, on the "Latest" screen, right above the first bar on the line where it tells you the date, notice that the left part of the date line is blank. If you have a pm, there will be a notice there that tells you you have something in your inbox. To read it, click the inbox icon in the row of icons on top of that screen.

So go out now and post to get your count up. You probably only need a dozen or so more posts (I'm guessing).

By the way, welcome to DU and thanks for your generous heart.

109. If you are using a browser with a "reload" or "refresh" feature
just click on that and the new posts will appear.

You will still have to leave threads that you post to and come back in again because of "postdata" until the thread has over 20 posts. But the rest you should be able to reload.

But, what the hell. Congratulations on your three job offers. I am sure this myth of a bad economy is just being perpetuated by the liberal media in a shameless and treasonous effort to slander the President. Its probably just their way of covering for all of us abortion-loving, America-hating, lazy, drug-addicted liberal communists, right?

But, congratulations. You must be such an industrious little capitalist (who, despite being very hard working, somehow has enough time to troll a progressive website at the wee hours of the morning).

134. First of all
Thanks for the support, I will soon pass it on to another.
Now, for you snot, I doubt very much you had 3 job offers this MONTH.
I got a story, the cons of this country say to help yourself, well I did.
I went and got 2 computer certificates, 1 in Technical Support and 1 in Network Administration.
I landed in the job market to see the bottom drop out.
People with years of experience are out of work, and who will hire me with less the 1 year of experience?
So I take jobs for a day or 2, I get a call at 11am and rush to work at 2 pm.
Still I am looked down upon by people like you, WHY?
Aren't I doing what you say will make me succeed?
If your junta hadn't have given the farm to the rich, who hoard money, and instead given it to people that would HAVE SPENT IT, the economy would be in much better shape.
But, as usual, the facts just don't register with people like you.
So now I will borrow MORE money to take certification classes in an attempt to get someone to hire me.
So take that superior attitude of yours and SHOVE IT.

136. Me
Which is why I started a blog devoted to covering crimes committed by Republicans. I figured if I couldn't afford a DU membership, I could use free resources available on the web to make a contribution of some sort to the fight to free our nation from this scum.

I donated again last night asking the admins to make the choices, but they demured. I can't get on here as often as I'd like, so if Proles or Bleach could send me(or Skinner) the list, we can mint some new stars. TIA

144. paycheck to paycheck here...single parent....
i pay my bills...i have food in the pantry...but thats where it ends. i have to account for every penny. i am working and, thank god, have insurance provided by the company. my son is insured by his mother. i have a car. i would love to donate here...it has been a godsend for me quite frankly...but there is just no way at this time. someone else said it above...it would be nice to have the star, but i'd rather a donation in my name go to the non profit i work for...or even the ronald mcdonald house(despite your feelings about mcdonalds, the ronald mcdonald house is worthy...i say that from experience)if you'd like to sponsor me, please im me and i'll give you the info you'll need........rpl

163. Poor with a credit card beats poor poor
I just donated .6 percent of my total yearly income to DU (an embarrassingly small amount, believe me) via the credit card. To Bleachers (and the others) who are sponsoring the poor poor -- that's very kind of you. I'd justifiably claim poverty myself, but so long as the card isn't maxed out I'll cover my share -- which I hope allows you all to sponsor someone else who truly needs it.
Here on the Saginaw homefront, Polly's covering the sex, Mike B is covering the weed and Andy the Right Wing Republican is covering the beer. This frees up enough to make my pitifully small donation, which I am glad to do.
John
Just waiting until Andy finds out he's indirectly helping to subsidize a bunch of damned socialists. Makes the donation even more worth it.

164. Speak for yourself, pal (not about the credit card comment)
Edited on Sat Nov-15-03 03:15 PM by tom_paine
Some of us are merely Social Capitalists who believe strongly in a Jeffersonian View of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

However, as I have said before, 5thGenDemocrat, I would be proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your Pinko Self on the barricades anyday.

(Just don't expect me to surrender my property to the State or start spouting Dialectical Materialism after it's all over)

166. You gotta understand, mr paine
That to Andy the Right Wing Republican, anyone to the left of Joe McCarthy is a socialist. And Andy isn't any too sure about Tailgunner Joe, either.
John
The donation is nothing -- wait until he finds out I'm going to borrow his Chrysler to get to the barricade. See ya there!
