Every Republican administration during my lifetime |
|
Has has as its accompaniment a war and a recession.
I was born in 1975.
Reagan- Cold War; 1980s recession Bush I- Iraq War I; continuation of recession. Bush II- Iraq War II, War on Afghanistan. Possible War on Iran, N. Korea.
Let me hammer it home one more time- every Republican administration during my lifetime has had as its accompaniment a war (sometimes more than one) and a recession.
It is my life's experience that Republicans in high power equals war and recession. Am I wrong in this assertion?

as evidenced by some other replies on this thread, it's only accurate until you go back a certain length of time.
That said- it's true for all Republican admins in my lifetime.
Yes, Clinton did have military actions during his administration, but they were never on the scale of nation-to nation all-out war.

14. And in my lifetime, as well. You're right. |
|
Having said that, the definitions of "Democrat" and "Republican" were not as defined back then as they are today, correct? I believe the species of republican we deal with today is not a Teddy Roosevelt republican.

you can hardly blame him for the Cold War, a better example would Grenada, or his many and illegal excursions into Latin America.
And depending on when you were born in 1975 you may have caught the tail end of a non-recession non-war time of a repuke administration. :) Im sure you enjoyed it.

4. Hey, I was born in 1975! |
|
When was this non-war, non-recession era? I don't remember a day under a republican administration that didn't feel scary.

9. Hehe, there was a very very small time frame |
|
under the Ford administration from March of 1975- January of 1976 where there was no recession, and there was also no state of war in this time. I present to you the great success of the wonderful repukes.

during the Cold War would have shown the Soviets to have a much smaller arsenal than they painted themselves as having. Not that they couldn't have obliterated us had they chosen to- they could. The ifference then was that there was an official stance of mututal distrust created by a climate in which there were two major military powers competing for supremacy.
Eventually, both leaders realized the situation was untenable. I can't blame Ronnie for the start of the cold war- that was waiting for us regardless. I can, however, blame him for using it as a political tool, something to keep the populace in fear and on a defensive posture, ready to strike at the slightest provocation, and I can blame him for using that as a excuse to initiate a massively overkilling buildup of military might at the expense of the people of this country.
Do you see any parallels between by description of Ronnie's actions as President, and those of *'s?

Wilson - WWI FDR - WWII Truman - Korea LBJ - Vietnam
Yes, unfortunately, they were all Dems and yes, there are good arguments for the justification of the first three. Historically, I guess it depends on one's perspective.

didn't start the problem in Viet Nam. Eisenhower did.
Same for WWI and WWII...the president stuck with resolving a problem didn't cause it.

16. You can remove blame for Vietnam from LBJ, even if he didnt start it |
|
he escalated it considerably. I still firmly believe that we would have seen a drastically different situation in Vietnam had Kennedy not been killed.

17. Ike and then Kennedy sent |
|
advisors. We send advisors to dozens of countries. It doesn't automatically follow that once we send advisors, then we send in 500,000 troops. That was Johnson's decision and I blame him for it.

6. Well, I was born in 1948 |
|
And my grandparents (who were born in the late 1800s -- if you can believe THAT!!) used to say (Eisenhower was in office at the time of me hearing them say this), "War with Democrats and Recession with Republicans."
I think. Or was it the other way around? Some history buff ought to bail me out on this.

12. Actually, what you want to look at is deficit spending |
|
The repubs give tax cuts but really rack up the balance on the federal credit card. Something we can all look forward to paying off for a very long time!
