Every elected official has his ups and downs, but these days New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg seems to be intent on throwing himself off a political cliff without a parachute.

How else to explain the mayor's inexplicable behavior? In the last three weeks he has:

Attacked his popular predecessor, Rudy Giuliani, as a "relentless micromanager" who left New York "divided by race."

Made a tasteless comparison between the alleged number of deaths from secondhand smoke to the number of victims on 9/11.

Created a political hit list of prominent congressional Republicans to whom he says New Yorkers shouldn't contribute.

Seen his plan to scrap party primaries in city elections rejected by 70% of voters.
