Sagging Kerry vows campaign comeback

LITCHFIELD, N.H. - Desperate to salvage a stalled White House campaign, U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry yesterday turned up the heat on his rivals and promised a full campaign turnaround in the coming weeks.

Returning to New Hampshire amid a staff shakeup that has come to define his faltering presidential bid, Kerry repeatedly appealed to reporters to ``just stay tuned'' to a coming comeback.

``We're on the move, stay tuned,'' Kerry said, under fire with repeated questions on his failed effort to date at catching former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean. ``Just watch what we're doing, you'll see.''

Kerry subtly tweaked his campaign message, focusing more on staple issues for left-leaning voters loyal to Dean such as the environment and health care. He stepped up criticism of Dean, saying bluntly that the former Vermont governor will ``raise your taxes,'' and also began a concerted effort to draw support from second- and third-tier candidates.

``People are going to have to make their decision not to throw away their votes,'' Kerry said during a Manchester radio interview.

7. It's nice to see that the Deanies
are still able to fight off the urge to launch petty attacks on other candidates. It's totally consistent with their distinguished silence when their own candidate is criticized.

4. I've seen evidence of this move:
"As I've said before, if I saw someone burning the flag, I'd punch them in the mouth because I love the flag, but the Constitution that I fought for preserves the right of free expression."

Nice move, a more spiteful, mor violent candidate. That oughtta do the trick.

12. So he FEELS like punching someone who burns a flag, BUT he believes in
their RIGHT to do so and has taken BULLETS for their right to do so.

Guess that's not good enough for you. You prefer your candidate's desire to JAIL flagburners?

17. Feels like?
He didn't say he would feel like punching the person, he said he would punch the person. Talk about a violation of my rights.

You are awfully forgiving, but then, your inability to criticize your candidate is well known in these parts.

15. Did it sound odd when Dean said it?
Dean accused his Dem opponents of having voted to raise taxes on the middle class. Does that sound odd to you too?

11. Telling people the truth about Dean is something you can't stand.
YOU'VE accepted his marginal environmental record, his marginal criminal justice record, his marginal gun control record, his marginal democratic credentials (try Libertarian party, Howie), his marginal stands on most Democratic issues and you want everyone else to do the same. Ain't gonna happen.

19. LOL
Yeah, you Kerry and Clark fans are the only ones who can see through Dean's disguise! Not even all those liberal Vermonters who elected him EVERY TIME HE RAN. You guys are smart and everyone else is stupid! And you're incredibly unbiased! That's the part that I admire. You guys are all so open minded about Dean. It really lends credibility to your "criticism" of him.

20. LOL
Yeah, you and that 15% that Dean is polling at are the only ones who aren't being fooled into thinking that Dean is insincere. You 15 percenters are smart and everyone else is stupid! And you're incredibly unbiased! That's the part I admire. You people are all so open minded about Dean. It really lends credibility to your criticism of Kerry, like how Kerry's Harley is a stupid prop, but Dean's guitar playing was smart because it was "self-deprecating"

BTW, in VT the liberal voters voted third-party. In MA, liberals voted for real liberal Democrats, like Kerry and Kennedy.

28. If you read my earliest posts about Dean
then you'd know how openminded I was.

BTW...Dean's centrist ways were the cause of the Progressive Party pulling 10% of the vote in his last election. The "liberals" of Vermont weren't so thrilled with him as you think. You did notice that Ben and Jerry support Kucinich. I think they know Dean has put on a tremendous populist act, cuz when he had the chance to govern for 11 years, he chose to go AGAINST the progressive Democrats, more often aligning with the GOP.

All your spin is not going to change that reality.

10. Kerry needs to do something
There's a myth that Gore ran a bad campaign, and while I think he could have done things differently at times it was a successful campaign (he did win after all),but in Kerry's case it wont be a myth. This campaign has been a mess.

21. Kerry's got to focus on getting his message out
These past few months have been character wars between Dean and Kerry and that has GOT to stop.
I still believe that Kerry is the better man on the issues, and while he may not be as interesting as Dean, IMHO, I think Dean has a loose mouth that may end up costing us BIG soon...
