Poll Shows Americans' Views on Iraq War

WASHINGTON - More than half of Americans say President Bush decided to go to war on Iraq based on faulty assumptions, says a poll released Thursday.

An overwhelming majority of those polled — 87 percent — said the Bush administration portrayed Iraq as an imminent threat before the war. About as many, 84 percent, say the United States has not found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, according to the poll for the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland.

Six in 10 say that before going to war, the U.S. government should have taken more time to find out if Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Troops have found little evidence to validate most of the Bush administration's assertions before the war that Iraq had an active chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs.

Those who believe the war was based on faulty assumptions about Iraq are divided on whether the president knew the assumptions were false, according to the poll conducted by Knowledge Networks.

2. faulty assumptions?
Bush didn't base the war on faulty assumptions, it's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that there's oil in that there desert.

5. Yay!
Thanks Jebus, they've finally grown a collective brain!!

"About as many, 84 percent, say the United States has not found weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, according to the poll for the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland."

Remember, the polls used to show profound ignorance about WMD and whether they had been found. There is hope!

8. Yes, But. . .
The article did say that nearly 60% still think there was a link between Hussein and al Qaida, despite the fact that our own military says it can find nothing to support such a belief.

So, there's still some dumbass beliefs out there.

13. I'll bet that
it has to do with the bombings and attacks in Iraq, in part. It gives them another opportunity to bring up al Qaida and Hussein in the same breath.

I'll take any progress on this issue, though. The stubborn ignorance was really getting to me.

6. With our media the way it is, right-leaning, it does take some time for
the real truth to finally come out. It does give me more cause for hope in 2004.

9. 57% still are in need of brain transplants
"Despite these doubts, a majority, 57 percent, said the United States made the right decision going to war against Iraq — down from 68 percent who felt that way in May"

About the 16% who still think the US found WMD, those folks who are totally hooked on to Fox news channel life support (TM) - jsut what the hell are they identifying as WMD? Let me at a few of those 16% - I want to hear just one of them actually name a WMD found over there...

Weapons of Mass Deception - many. Weapons of Mass Destruction - none.

11. That's what I was wondering
What do these 16% (which is what?...35MM people?) think we found out there?

Surely they can't answer that question, which means they are just guessing. Then my question is, were they trying to be right, or were they trying to be correct by answering yes?

14. 106 people
Representing the 35mm you cite. 106 very stoopid people.

"The PIPA poll of 1,008 adults was taken Oct. 29-Nov. 10 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points."

10. Good news
The number of delusional Americans is down to 16% from highs of 50% or more a few months ago.
