Sy HERSH: Shrub Will Lose in '04
******QUOTE*****

http://www.tuftsdaily.com/articleDisplay.jsp?a_id=2615

.... Our allies are bailing out like crazy," he added.
Hersh predicted "real trouble" for the President in the 2004 elections. "You have a war fought by the underclass, financed by the underclass and for the profit of the upperclass," He said. "I think Bush's going to lose , unless he makes some radical change, which he's not going to do."
The operation in Iraq has put pressure on the President, Hersh said. "Bush's got money troubles, troop troubles; he's going to have to hold it. I just don't see any way out." ....
On the current situation in Iraq, Hersh said "it's a mafia economy on the street level. That's way below the level of our operations." Hersh spoke of riding gangs and oil being smuggled in from Turkey. "It's worse every day, we are basically nowhere." He also pointed to the potential danger of leaving US troops in Iraq. "In the army, the only thing that matters is loyalty to your fellow soldiers."
As the soldiers watch their friends perish in Iraq, "they are going to start taking it to the people and to the wrong people." ....

1. The under class quote is a great one
"You have a war fought by the underclass, financed by the underclass and for the profit of the upperclass"

All the sacrifices in this war are by the middle class or below. Sacrifice is for losers according to Bush.

Would love to see the Bush twins enlisting...

2. Yes, it is that bad... but
I'm sure Bush has a plan: 1) spend the $87bn as fast as possible and squeeze even more out of the national treasury for his friends (but don't go on TV and announce it this time!); 2) have his corporate buddies buy Iraq's best corporations and resources at rock-bottom prices (this has already been proclaimed legal by Bremer); 3) set up a provisional government with massive military security (some of our troops will have to stay there to protect the profits); and 4) declare the Iraqi people liberated and bring home some troops for televised victory parades just before the election.

6. Slate (SHAFER) Sez HERSH Was Right about WMD

******QUOTE*****

http://slate.msn.com/id/2091147/

Seymour M. Hersh was right about WMD in Iraq. I was wrong.
By Jack Shafer

.... As even casual news consumers know, U.S. forces have not found WMD in Iraq. As much as I would like to wait another six months before writing a mea culpa in the hopes that somebody discovers an anthrax or sarin depot outside Baghdad, I cannot. The reason I threw a brick at Hersh was that I believe whenever a journalist predicts, projects, or prognosticates and gets it wrong, he owes his readers a blush and a concession.

This column is mine.

(except for maybe two people) knew there were no WMD's from the onset.

21. Well, to be entirely honest
I suspected that there probably were WMD's (since everyone had seemed to think so for years), however, I didn't believe that Saddam was a threat to us, for many reasons.

20. "I was wrong...
...but here's where I wasn't wrong." Kind of half-assed. I guess you take what you can get.

5. some little phrases that are kinda wacky...
maybe this was translated to something else and
back to English...

Like:
After the lecture, Leila Fawaz, Fletcher's Issam M. Fares Professor of Lebanese and Eastern Mediterranean Studies, said Hersh "had a lot of courage to face unpleasant roof. (unpleasant roof?)

16. Actually it may be a translation problem - maybe not.
The word "roof" is used in Russia to denote a criminal organization that offers protection and other services. But they would use it in context like, Iran and Syria are looking for a Kryshi (roof) with Russia rather than the US. So it is used in different ways.

Maybe the Lebanese use it as well? Or the Professor used the Russian word, in English, on purpose. I am sure Sy knows what a 'roof' is. ANd he is sitting under a leaking one in the USA right now.

In other words, Fares is saying, "Mate, you ain't payin' the blokes 'round the corner the dosh, and yus still got yer arms and legs!" (an attempt at London Gangster).

No he wasn't whoring or paying to play. Hersh is an entity on his own out there. And my personal hero.

14. Somewhat reminds me of a George Will article in 1992,
in which he said, ".., George Bush will lose the WH, and drag his party into a loss, possibly of landslide proportions..." (paraphrased). At that point, I knew Poppy was toast.

I sorta wish that George Will had said all this, however.

15. Well, This A.M. on IMUS, WILL *did* Say
that his opinion is that the country is still divided 50-50 or 49-49-----although he's WRONG, since this is only of THE ONES WHO VOTE, not of the whole eligible voters, who, if everybody voted, would not leave a single Repuke in office. He took this 50-50 to mean that Shrub JUST MIGHT LOSE to ANY of the Dems who might end up as nominee. He then said that, unlike his Repuke co-goons who go around saying they prefer DEAN as the easiest mark, WILL prefers GEPHARDT because (WILL talking here) the GEP would "at least be a SOUNDLY CREDIBLE" presidential office holder, that (WILL talking here) DEAN "lacks the temperament". Uh, how any Shrubbite can judge the "temperament" to be prez of others, given Shrub's temperament, is like IMUS and PAGLIA judging others based on looks. So there *does* appear to be some trepidation among the wingnuts about Shrub's electibility---------unless they are just psyching us and really are headed for that landslide.
