Wife says "we'll move to Canada" regarding conscription.... |
|
My wife is apolitical. Probably representative of most wives. Was listening to WABC radio in the car on our way to one of our favorite restaurants this morning. Top of the hour news headlines describe "Operation Iron Hammer." I tell the wife about what has been going on in Iraq and that if things don't turn around soon, she should expect to see our two sons being conscripted into Bush's War after 2004 due to, what I expect to be, a mass exodus from the US Army and National Guard. Suddenly my apolitical wife becomes "interested" in politics. We have family already in Canada. My wife's profession is one of a medical nature which I'm sure would be welcomed by Canada. Wife tells me "we'll send the boys to live with Uncle so-and-so and if that doesn't work we'll move to Canada. They're not getting our sons for Bush's War." I feel I paid my dues. I served for 5 years in the US Navy. A four year enlistment with a one year extension at the request of the government, which I did. I left the Navy with 4.0 evals - which is for those of you who don't know, the highest standards the navy assigns someone as to their all-around performance. I state this not to toot my own horn. Just to qualify myself as someone who has the right to make the following statement. Bush and his PNAC team are criminals of the highest order. This war in Iraq, completely illegal in my mind, is criminal. The outing of a CIA agent working along lines of WMD's in retribution for criticism and to quell anyone else from exposing the truth, is criminal. The deliberate deception of the people and the Congress into trying to link 9/11 with Iraq, is ccriminal. It pains me to think that I would have to leave the country that I love out of fear that my sons would be drafted into an occupation that is wholly without merit. For that, I hate you Mr Bush and your co-conspirators with a fire burning in my belly. May you burn in hell.

1. This wife is not apolitical, and there are as many apolitical wives |
|
as there are apolitical husbands.
She is right about leaving the country, I wish I could convince the apolitical husband that that's what we should do.

I've never heard a woman refer to her spouse that way. Thanks for your answer.
College deferment isn't an option anymore either, which is good I guess. But I don't know what I'm going to do about my son either. I've got an apolitical daughter who will never leave, in large part because of her apolitical boyfriend.

8. If the Draft does come, first thing to do is vote everyone associated with |
|
it out of office. Second, encourage your son to enlist in the Navy or the Coast Guard, they are "safer" than the Army, Marines, National Guard or forward deployed Air Force unit.

13. Probably conscientious objector |
|
He really is. He says he's stayed out of fights for 17 years and if the government can't figure out how to do that, it's their problem. It's not that he's a coward, he's an athlete, boxes, football, the whole thing. He's always defending the kids that get picked on, he just finds a way to do it without a fight. I don't know what that really means in military terms, conscientious objector. If you can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

by the time the draft comes it will be to late. They will have their tentacles into everything. My boys are 5 and 2. I'm telling the wife that they can't have my kids. I could probably live through another shrub term but if Jeb follows him I'll leave with the boys whether she comes or not.

7. I'm in the same boat as you... |
|
My wife hates Bush and all, but refuses to consider moving to another country. :( If the worst happens next year, I hope she changes her mind.
For those who'd accuse me of trying to "run away from the fight," I would fight just as vigorously for freedom for all Americans, regardless of which side of the border I reside. Remember the Polish 303rd RAF squadron? I'll form a new version of that.

6. One way to get the youth political... |
|
Great post from a vet. I can't imagine the level of protests if the draft talk seriously begins...and I would be right up there. I have a 18 yr old son who I'd ship to anywhere I could. Would he be safe in Sweden?? Have a brother there... I would even go to jail if I had to...
They should open the draft to women too (I've got a 20 yr old daughter too) and then Bush would have to worry about his precious twins...what then...huh????

10. your american patriotism is REAL |
|
Deny the criminals resources. That is why i've already left the US. They ain't taking my taxes, or anything else to perpetrate their crimes... that said, britain is, but at least they are doing some good socialist things with it.
You should pursue your canada option now, and keep it as a safe backup... and at least you'll know if it will/won't work as australia/NZ is a more distant possibility. Keep your boys alive.

18. The protest is likely to be masssssive |
|
at least 10's of 1000's of people if not hundreds of thousands. Bush is universally hated here. He has made my life more difficult certainly as people associate american and the accent with the political america sometimes unfortunately.
They say that al queda is waiting to nuke him from the crowds... bollocks... the citizens of britain don't need no terrorists to hate bush... if he gets outside the cordon, regular brits will tear him limb from limb. They'll do us all a service... criminal murdering bastard scumbag yellowbellied heap of parrot droppings that he is... ;-)
The best protest location is sedgefield where blair is taking bush to his constituency... blairs crawford.... likely someone might get the chance to egg him, pie him or spit on him there...

17. It sure gets alot more real when your kid is draft age. |
|
My kids have some time, so I'm fighting it out here. I'm hoping Dean gets in and stops this mess. I'm not sure if some of the other dems are aligned with TPTB like PNAC lite.
So, if Serpiente saying that Canada won't take draft dodgers is right, that's a bummer. Go now or stay and fight it out.
I love Canada.

19. On the issue of desertion..., |
|
as I understand it, they don't want you if you don't want to be there. They don't hunt you down and take you to jail like they used to.
Maybe there is a way to opt out. It's along shot, but worth inquiring about.

Are we stuck in the 1950's?
I agree with everything else in the post. I'm moving to BC no matter what happens. Possibly the only thing that could keep me here is if Zombie FDR crawled out of his grave and got in the White House.
Besides his constant diet of brains, the US would be all peachy again.
