Bush to meet bereaved British relatives

Julian Borger in Washington
Friday November 14, 2003
The Guardian

...

In an interview with British journalists, the president shrugged off the threat of huge demonstrations against his visit, insisting the trip, the first full state visit by a president since 1918, would be "a really interesting and fun experience".

...

"I'm really looking forward to spending time with my friend - and I emphasise 'my friend' - Tony Blair," Mr Bush said. "He's a smart, capable, trustworthy friend, and we've got a lot to talk about."

...

But he said the part of the trip he was looking forward to most was staying as a guest of the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

"Obviously, staying at Buckingham Palace is going to be an historic moment. I never dreamt when I was living in Midland, Texas, that I would be staying in Buckingham Palace," he said, joking that he would have to rent a morning suit for the occasion.

In fact, Mr Bush is no stranger to royalty. He met the Queen in Washington when his father was president.

3. I think he just says things like that
to tease the rest of us. "a really interesting and fun experience". He knows damn well he's going to turn that city into a swirling toilet bowl of frenzied mass protests, maybe even riots depending on how much he pisses them off.

Fun, indeed. The same thing happened in Sydney when he addressed the Australian government on his most recent trip. He was interrupted (something he's not used to) by an Australian MP, and his response was, "I love democracy", or something to that effect.

I suspect he just has no idea what to say about things like this. Sometimes I wonder in the midst of his mental illness if he once in a while has lucidity enough to realize what the rest of the world thinks of him.

8. "I love democracy"
Bush* quote on democracy reminds me of Woody Allen's quote on death,"It's not that I'm afraid to die. I just don't want to be there when it happens."

5. Remember this story about Bush's boots?
Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 02:46 AM by rmpalmer
The last time he dined with the Queen — in 1992 at his father's White House, wearing cowboy boots emblazoned with GOD SAVE THE QUEEN — he asked if she had any black sheep in her family. "Don't answer that!" his mother Barbara interjected, trying to avoid embarrassment. This time he's the President, the man in charge. Whatever Bush does, Blair will have to live with it.

I wonder if Blair see's Dubya as "his friend - emphasised 'friend' - George W. Bush."

Is Tony Blair just the stupidest Prime Minister Britain has ever had?
