Roy Moore for President!
I was talking to a Dem activist friend last night, and he has heard rumblings that Roy Moore may consider a run for President as an Independent. Mind you, these are all rumors discussed over a beer, so I wouldn't bet the farm on them.

However, it brings up an interesting possibility - Roy Moore sees the Republicans as not supporting his crusade to talibanize the nation into a "Christian" nation. He is also very narcissistic and has a great desire for power. In other threads, I have pointed out how this will undoubtedly lead him to seek the Governor's office in Alabama. But, that may not be big enough for Roy, or he may wish to kick off his 2006 Gubernatorial campaign with something bigger - a run for President of the US as an independent.

Wouldn't this be grand? No way in hell he'd win, but he would pull 15%, at least, from Bush.

Roy Moore is the kind of guy that responds to attention. I think a petition to draft Moore into the race may be warranted.

1. That would indeed be great!
I encourage him to run! If he does, he'll have a Strom Thurmond, George Wallace effect on the race. He takes a southern state or two away from Bush, whether by winning or splitting the conservative vote and helping the Democrat, then Bush loses the election.

well I take that back JEB might be the heir apparent in 08..

Go Roy.. whoever is running as a dem will appreciate your efforts to weed out the racist fundamentalists from the rest of the pack :)

13. I think '04 is still in play
The primary season will start in 60+ days. As an independent, Roy won't need the primary season. While the Dems are campaigning against each other, and Bush is raising funds for his campaign, Roy can start his campaign as an Independent. He would know that he couldn't win, but that wouldn't be his ultimate aim anyway.

16. He still has time
He can raise money quickly as an independent. He's not running for a nomination, although he'll have some work to do quickly to make sure that he's on ballots.

And knowing this guy, he WOULD think that he could win.

2. Why not?
Hell, the repugs want to cross party lines during primaries to sckew the Dem results. Why not return the favor; if possible in your state, put Moore in as a write in candidate for Repug.

6. All it would take would be one state
Look, if he ran in Alabama, he would get at least 35% of the vote, Bush would get 20%, and the Dem would get the rest.

Now, imagine a state like Georgia or SC with Roy on the ticket.

22. screw judicial ethics
Doesn't the fact that he repeatedly violated the judicial ethics code bother those that support him? OK, fine, God's law is above US law...but the bottom line is he refused to do what his superiors told him and deserves to lose his job. After all, if I refuse to serve a patron that walks into the library, I will lose my job.

What did Moore mean when he said the panel asked him three times to "deny God" and he said no? I'm skeptical that this was the true wording of question--was he instead asked to admit he was wrong?

"Doesn't the fact that he repeatedly violated the judicial ethics code bother those that support him?"

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

What did Moore mean when he said the panel asked him three times to "deny God" and he said no?

Yes, they wanted him to deny God. This is a country founded on the principle of God, not godless communism, godless socialism, and goldess education. God must be affirmed in the pledge of allegiance and on our money, so we need Roy Moore. Roy will fight for gOd!

"I'm skeptical that this was the true wording of question--was he instead asked to admit he was wrong?"

But he wasn't wrong.

27. not wrong
I didn't ask if he was wrong. I asked the text of the question to which Moore responded that he would not deny God. I'm sorry, I don't think the 9 judges asked "do you deny God?". I can't find the text online so if anyone else knows....

Not all of us believe in your God. All of us are expected to obey the law of the country in which we claim citizenship.

If he had kept his job, he would have had to agree that removing the 10 commandments was right, and thereby be denying the validity of the 10 commandments and their legitimate place in American history. Thereby he would be forced to deny God's Law. So they didn't ask him directly 'do you deny God,' but it comes to the same thing. Moore was right to not deny God.

"Not all of us believe in your God."

Wink wink.

"All of us are expected to obey the law of the country in which we claim citizenship."

Not if it is counter to God's law. Would you advocate obeying a law allowing slavery, for example? Of course not. Sometimes the Law of Man can be wrong, and must be placed in subservience to the Law of the Almighty Lord, our God.

I don't see how removing the 10 commandments monument is "denying the validity of the 10 commandments and their legitimate place in history". No one is trying to abolish the 10 commandments. Put one up in your front yard. A house in my neighborhood put up a huge tablet every Christmas. Put one up in front of my house or in the park supported by my tax dollars and we have a problem.

Would it be OK to reproduce a couple of pages of the Koran in "tablet" form and install it outside a courthouse? Some Jewish prayers?

I don't know what you're trying to say with "wink wink". Are you trying to imply you know more about my spiritual beliefs than I?
Is it that difficult to believe that not everyone believes the same as you? That some of us don't give two shakes of a lamb's tail about the 10 commandments?

Uh, I believe Americans who followed the "Law of the Allmighty God" also owned slaves. Your point? Of course the law of man is fallible. If you see something wrong with the law, do something to change it. I don't agree with our drug laws, but I am still expected to obey them.

"I don't see how removing the 10 commandments monument is "denying the validity of the 10 commandments and their legitimate place in history". No one is trying to abolish the 10 commandments. Put a one up in your front yard. A house in my neighborhood put up a huge tablet every Christmas. Put one up in front of my house or in the park supported by my tax dollars and we have a problem."

This is only the first step in the abolition of God. The next thing you know they'll be making Churches pay taxes. And Judge Moore has a right to put the 10 commandments in his courthouse. Do you think that he doesn't have a right to believe in God? How are we supposed to have moral children if they don't say 'under God' every day?

"Would it be OK to reproduce a couple of pages of the Koran in "tablet" form and install it outside a courthouse? Some Jewish prayers?"

No, because they are not God's Law and are not in the tradition of the nation.

"I don't know what you're trying to say with "wink wink". Are you trying to imply you know more about my spiritual beliefs than I?
Is it that difficult to believe that not everyone believes the same as you? That some of us don't give two shakes of a lamb's tail about the 10 commandments?"

... I'm tring to imply... like in the first post in this thread --- "Wouldn't this be grand? No way in hell he'd win, but he would pull 15%, at least, from Bush." And try not to worry, you too can be saved. Jesus wants to save you. You just have to open up your heart to him.

"Uh, I believe Americans who followed the "Law of the Allmighty God" also owned slaves. Your point?"

No, because they owned slaves they were not following the Law of the Allmighty God.

"Of course the law of man is infallible. If you see something wrong with the law, do something to change it. I don't agree with our drug laws, but I am still expected to obey them."

If the law said you had to jump off a cliff, would you do it? There are some times when you must disobey the law. When the law requires you to deny God, that is one of those times.

He's playing the part of Roy Moore supporter (very well, I might add!) to show how illogical but unmoving their arguments are.

Hence the winks and the nudges.

So, you see...we need to get Roy in the race because his supporters would go to the ends of the earth for him!

This doesn't bother his supporters because they believe he is obeying a higher power. To them, God trumps judicial ethics codes. They are equating this fight to MLKs fight against racist laws in the South. A poor comparison, but theirs nonetheless.

As for the panel, I believed they asked him if he now agreed that what he did was wrong. Moore twisted this to mean that they were asking him to deny God. His supporters eat this stuff up.

Edited on Fri Nov-14-03 11:45 AM by Brian Sweat
we just want him to run and siphon off about 5 percent of Shrub's votes.

Yes, his repeated violation of judicial ethics bothers me. I would never vote for him, but I know that some people would. Most of the people that would vote for him, will vote for Bush if he doesn't run.

He could really help us out. That doesn't mean I like him, but I won't complain if he hurts Shrub's re-election chances.

On Edit:

"What did Moore mean when he said the panel asked him three times to "deny God" and he said no? I'm skeptical that this was the true wording of question--was he instead asked to admit he was wrong?"

In the Bible, Jesus tell Peter that he (Peter) will deny him (Jesus) three times before the cock crows. Peter insist that he would never do this, but in the end he does.

Moore is using symbolism here. He is saying that he is a desciple of Jesus and that us evil heathens are trying to get him to deny his faith. He is just playing it up for his audience. The court never asked him to deny his beliefs.

He's apparently got some deep pocketed backers, and has been badly bitten by the publicity bug. On top of that he's willingly painted himself into the Christian Reconstructionist corner so deeply that I'm convnced he believes his rhetoric to the point of being consumed by it.

As we say down here, "Bless his heart". I hope he does make a national run just so he can realize that what flies in Alabama is far from mainstream.

The ancient aphorism still holds:"Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad."
